indeed I am amazed he was not banned. for all those that do not know normally in the UK anything 100+ on the motorway is an instant ban

Yes and no... depends if you have a good lawyer. There are ways around some speeding offences, especially if overtaking comes into the equation as believe it or not, the speed limit in the UK does not apply when overtaking under certain circumstances. All comes down to establishing a believable excuse in the face of strict liability.

Just say what Sir Alex did way back in 1999. What an excuse :S

Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, was yesterday found not guilty of illegally driving on a motorway hard shoulder after magistrates heard he had been suffering from severe diarrhoea and was trying to get to a toilet.

Sir Alex was stopped by police on the M602, in Eccles, Greater Manchester, last February at the height of Manchester United's campaign which saw them win the treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup.

Footballer's have gotten away with higher speeds, but anyone getting away with anything just shows how easy the justice system is manipulated.

No, plenty of people are given dispensations or allowances depending on the circumstances, it's just that the only cases most of us actually hear about involve high profile individuals, as those are the only ones our fickle media are interested in. 'Getting away with it' isn't really an appropriate term in all cases (some; yes granted, but not all). Having a maliable system is a sign of a fair and just system, it's rigid systems where people are simply chucked in jail / fined heavily / or in less developed countries as far as corporal or capital punishment that have much more serious issues than ours. Better a man guilty of a minor offence walk free than they be punished unjustly in the face of potential doubt or reason.

Anybody that advocates a system for any 'crime' where an individual not be allowed to argue their case and simply be punished then they simply don't have a clue about how the law works (or indeed should work).

How does that work?

Officer "So Mr Brawn why where you doing 120?"
Ross "Well officer I was overtaking that other car doing 100"

thought you weren't supposed to overtake if it means you'll need to break the speed limit, I suppose if your being chased by baddies in a supermarket it'll count as ok though.

I break the speed limit every time a pass. Let's say there is Luca Badoer bumbling about with 50mph on a highway with a speed limit of 55mph and everybody else is usually doing 60mph. To make sure I spend the least amount of time in the opposite lane while passing LB, I commit to the passing manoeuver and step on it to get to 70-75mph, thus well above the posted speed limit.

I know the situation, I'm having driving lessons and was on a duel carriage way with a limit of 40 despite it being a clear 3 lane one. Person infront of me was doing less than 40 so I was looking to pass on the right, unfortunately with everyone else doing 50+ I didn't have a chance.

The gayest motorways are the ones around Birmingham which now have those big speed signs above you. So they constantly change the speed limit depending on the traffic.

So, you can't do 69 anymore whenever you feel like? Yeah, that sucks :whip:

yeah going into London? they suck, they have the averge speed camera's on them so you have to go 60mph or you die.

M6 toll is the best strech of motorway in the UK however.
