South Korea secures circuit funding

South Korean Grand Prix promoters have announced they have secured the financial funding to build a Formula 1 circuit that will be ready in time for 2010.

Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) - a joint-venture between the Jeollanam-do province government and official F1 promoter company M-Bridge Holdings - said on Tuesday it had raised $159.7 million from nine financial institutions.

KAVO said the rest of the money needed for the circuit would be raised through the organiser's capital and public subsidy.

South Korea secured a grand prix deal back in 2006 and is scheduled to make its debut in July next year, although a calendar circulated at the Belgian Grand Prix did not include the event.

The circuit, under construction in the South Cholla province, has been designed by Hermann Tilke.

I heard about this ages ago but nothing since, until now. I'm guessing that it was left off the provisional calender due to this funding issue, so maybe we'll see a revised 2010 schedule soon?

At the same time, great, yet another sodding Tilke track! When will it end?!:censored::hehe:

I doubt they'd be ready for 2010, but maybe 2011?

So many asian grands prix and so few asian drivers. Do these circuits sell out on race days?

I'd guess that Japan and Singapore do, Malaysia probably but China definitely does not - although Bernie seems to think that's not a problem because the capacity there is 300,000 people, and apparently over 100,000 people still turn up on race day. Don't think i believe him though....

i reckon there were about 12 people who actually bought their tickets for the Chinese Grand Prix in the grandstands this year. Malaysia doesn't sell out anymore, they put the prices up

300,000? How did they expect to fill it out? Does any race have enough demand to fill 300,000 seats?

Indy 500 maybe. Races certainly used to attract those sorts of crowds back in the pre-war era

Didn't Silverstone manage to reach capacity (120,000) this year on race day? I'm sure I remember reading that it had reached about 300,000 over the full three days.

Turkey managed about 30,000.
