remember when Kubica was injured, and Vettel was a test driver @ BMW and he got called up to bat at the plate, and he did surprisingly well that he got picked up for a seat... yeah..

but then again, testing restrictions now a days could be the culprit.

Badoer might "now" have more experience driving the F60 then any other possible canidate since he has now done 2 GPs in it lol

At the time, Vettel was actively racing and in another series. I believe he had also done some Friday testing the year before, not sure about in the winter.

From F1 Live:

If Giancarlo Fisichella puts his signature on a five-race deal to finish the season with Ferrari, he is likely to then stay with the Maranello-based team next year and beyond as test driver.

The news means that not only does Luca Badoer face imminently losing his opportunity to race in injured Felipe Massa's race boots, but his long tenure as test driver dating back to the late nineties might also be over.

The suggestion is that Tonio Liuzzi is set to move into the Force India race seat full time next year, and immediately if Fisichella's Ferrari switch is completed ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

"There is a lot of noise around about this," Liuzzi, currently Force India's test driver but reportedly already with a race contract for 2010, told GPWeek.

"For sure regarding the rumours I hope they are right. I need to drive as soon as possible because I am dying without racing. There is a high chance that something could happen."

It also emerges that Liuzzi is scheduled to conduct a straight line test in the Mercedes-powered VJM02 prior to the Italian Grand Prix. However, it is believed that the Monza reshuffle will occur depending on the outcome of medical tests currently being undergone by Massa in Miami.

Should the Brazilian get clearance to return to his seat sooner rather than later, Ferrari may be content to simply keep Badoer in the car for now.

It is believed that, according to a source close to his race engineer Rob Smedley, one test on Massa has already been completed, and the results were more positive than expected.

I don't think so. Fisichella loves racing too much to slink in to a testing role. What I think is more likely to happen is either a loan deal, or perhaps Liuzzi, Bourdais or Bortolotti get the race seat.

I can definitely see Fisi happily retiring at the end of the season if he moves to Ferrari. Liuzzi is a shoe-in as his potential replacement imo.

A lot of guys love racing too, and they dont get a seat. Fisi may be 'out of the market' not because he doesnt love racing, but because he has no other options... in anyway, he's definitely a better chioce than Badoer! I would give Bourdais a chance though...... or Anthony Ham... i mean Davidson.

Giving Badoer the seat was absurd. They should have placed Gene.

Badoer is starting to sound like Ralf...

Seriously though you'd think Ferrari would have considered Gene because unlike Badoer he has been actively racing this year, and won at Le Mans. Ok driving Sports Cars is different to an F1 car but at least he's been active.

Gene did a handy job covering for Ralf in 2004 at Williams, he did a better job than Pizza-boy Pizzonia as well.

I think if I was Fisi, I would be thinking... Hmm I am coming to the end of my career, and I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to race for Ferrari at Monza. should I take it or not......

I would not take long to make the decission if I was Fisi, lets face it he can do no worse than Badoer.

Yeah it would be a good swansong.

I had been wondering whether the car was being fitted with test parts for his tenure and never had the ability to go fast, but I guess he's just slow.

 And becoming Ferrari's test driver would be a nice cushy twilight job assignment in his home country. Plus, you never know, if he shone in the Ferrari this season, he might get picked up by one of the new teams such as USF1 (lots of experience could come in handy). Also, he's already busy with his Fisichella Motor Sport Academy and related ventures.

As Mika Salo so succinctly put it, everybody wants to drive for Ferrari. Anyone who says he doesn't is a liar.

Now perhaps it's not that absolute but I'll bet the farm it's true for the most part.
