I suppose but surely Ferrari knew what would happen if they put BAD in the car.

I'm not sure they did. He was quicker than this when he used to race for far worse teams. I think they've been taken aback by the way he's been overawed by the occassion and his complete lack of confidence.

Of course they did and my guess is that he wasn't too bad. If you look at all his mistakes, from crashing in park ferme, letting cars pass him in the pit lane, missing pit entrances and so on, they're all classic signs of indecision and a lack of confidence - which is then demonstrated in his lap times.

Last time he was testing, he was half a second off Kimi. Not bad for a guy who doesn't race.

That supports my side of the arguement, but I wouldn't expect Kimi to be giving it flat out. Nearer a second a lap I'd think is a realistic target.
