I didn't know that either. According to wikipedia he tried to save her (Mary Jo Kopechne) but didn't call the police until the next morning.

Certainly the end of an era. On the whole, I agree with many of the issues which Kennedy stood for - universal healthcare, social justice, etc. - but one thing serious annoyed me about him: his views on Irish politics. Like so many Americans, he believed his Irish heritage gave him the right to comment on Irish politics and knowledge about the country's problems. And, like so many Americans, he was wrong on both counts, which is why Kennedy repeatedly spoke in favour of the IRA's campaign of armed terror, which resulted in the death of thousands of innocent people and millions of pounds worth of damage, security costs, and compensation. In his old age, Kennedy's views mellowed slightly, so I came to respect him more.
