Raikkonen hints at Ferrari departure...

Fri, 28 Aug 20:53:13 2009
Buzz Up!

Kimi Raikkonen on Friday admitted for the first time the possibility he will leave Ferrari at the end of the season. Although his potential departure has been linked with a full-time switch to rallying, the Finn said no matter what happens, he is staying in Formula One.

"If for some reason I am not at Ferrari next season I know I'll have a seat at another team in the paddock," he is quoted as saying by Britain's Daily Telegraph. "It's not a problem. Other teams want me."

His comments coincide with increasing speculation that Ferrari has now signed a contract with Fernando Alonso and needs to part with either of its existing contracted drivers for 2010: Raikkonen, or the recovering Felipe Massa.

It is believed an amicable split between Ferrari and Raikkonen is likely, but it will cost the Italian team millions as his engagement next year would have earned him in excess of $45m.

"I'm too young to retire. I have a contract with Ferrari for next season. If I didn't want to race next season I would not have signed a contract," he added.

Alonso's move would obviously create a gap at Renault, but arguably the better vacant seat is at McLaren, who are openly considering parting with Heikki Kovalainen.

It may have been a Freudian slip, but the BBC quoted team boss Martin Whitmarsh as saying at Valencia last weekend: "Kimi's really raised his game and all weekend has done a great job and Heikki has always been a fantastic team player and a good asset in our team but his race pace hasn't been good enough."

Lewis Hamilton was asked on Friday about the prospect of having a new team-mate, but deflected the question in the direction of his bosses before remarking that he's "happy with Heikki".

Raikkonen drove for McLaren between 2002 and 2006.

Yup silly season is shaping up.
I'm not sure its Kimi leaving Ferrari, but it's difficult to imagine Kimi + Alonso in the same team, although it would be my favourite lineup! Who knows. I wouldnt want Massa to be let go... but Kimi and Fernando would be incredible.

Wouldnt mind Kimi at Mclaren again either. it would be nice to see him win a WDC for Mclaren before retiring...

Ah well. Too much to worry about... better not think about it much.

Kimi McLaren would be very interesting. I suppose the only thing we know for certain is the driver line up will look very different next year, the introduction of some new teams will ensure that.

Dont think Kimmi would be suitable in a Mclaren, As far as im concerned Kimmi las lost his spark (the will to win), Dosent matter what car you put him in if the will to win isnt there then its pointless

Really? So the excellent drives to podium places, fighting hard to make good of the F60's long-run pace so that he can jump people in the pits, are what, exactly? I don't think Raikkonen's motivation is in question, he's had some strong performances this year and I think everyone forgets that he was running in third place before he retired at the Australian grand prix this year, too.

Kimi going back to McLaren would possibly work. I mean he'd just tell Ant Hamilton to f*** off and then he'd get himself an ice cream... only to discover (to his shock) that McLaren only do mini milks.

Then he'd leave the team.

i think he'd be better quitting F1 rather than moving to McLaren. If he's out of a drive at Ferrari, McLaren is the only other real option for a driver of his caliber and I don't see him getting equal treatment with Ham boy around.
