The English are poor losers, and even poorer winners. The lack of grace in defeat and dignity in victory is breathtaking and knows no bounds. Until the English teams and sports fans learn both of these virtues, I will not support them in any sporting tournament, as I do the other home nations.

Thank you for your opinion. It has been noted and swiftly tossed aside with all the other nonsense I've heard about this. I've been to a bunch of places since the final wicket fell, most of which have been celebrating our victory, and none of them have done so in anything less than a dignified fashion. Your generalisation, based upon the minority (who unfortunately get noticed more because the world likes to pick up on negatives more than positives), is pathetic.

A bit harsh

Gets on my nerves when people come out with ridiculous comments like that which are based on an image built by a minority of people. It's why it grates at me when people say that the Americans are all stupid, the French are all arrogant, the Spanish are all racist. It's just pathetic...

I agree with Denthúl; the media concentrates on the negative much more than the positive meaning the rest of the World believes that stereotype.

As for news media coverage of the Ashes win, what is wrong with it? sure there maybe disasters happening but it's nice to see a little bit of good news on TV and in the newspapers, make the people of England feel good for a change instead of all the recent doom and gloom that has plagued the news channels.

Right now I am quite happy to bask in the glory of victory instead of the usual agony of defeat, bring on the Ashes down under in 18 months!!!

Sorry, but absolutely not to this shameless degree. ITV news today, for instance, began and ended their programme with the Ashes. Their last report especially smacked of petty triumphalism, and the newsreader was practically creaming his underwear with excitement. The facts are that there are many more serious things going on in the world than England's victory in the cricket or Flintoff's sore knee, and England did not hammer Australia as claimed. Being hammered is something akin to what happened to England in 2006/07, when they got a 5-0 whitewashing by the Aussies - a fact conveniently forgotten by the English media. And, without doubt, talk England's victory will go on ceaselessly. Fair enough, England deservedly won. Congratulations. Celebrate a fantastic achievement. But I do not need to or want to hear about it every time I switch on the television for the next couple of years. I can't wait for Australia to win the next Ashes series, so I can get some respite from the never-ending self-aggrandisement. The English are poor losers, and even poorer winners. That is an issue which I'd like to talk to you about. But we won't spoil the Great English victory.

However I think that the problems in Edinburgh are certainly more newsworthy. And I am disgusted, as I write this, that our Prime Minister has been silent on the greatest mass murder on British soil, yet was due to send his congraduations to the England Cricket team!

then the average englishmen is still selfish? or to put it another way, I said the average englishmen is the average human being. Anyway since what I was talking about was about the english and british I used those terms rather then human being, don't read it as a singling out on the English, it was merely because the discussion was about the english.

That's the point isn't it; if Scotland did win the World Cup, it'll be front page news in every Scottish paper and news programme. The English normal win f*** all as well so when we have a little bit of glory, the Englishmen will bask in it for a little while as it's such a rare occurrence, and beating the old foe is always a nice feeling!

Gloamin is the time of the day when it isn't completely dark, but the sun isn't up. Basically early morning or dusk.
