GP2 is best the way to get into F1. Nothing comes closer to F1. If you look at all the new drivers we've seen over the past 3 years, (the years in which GP2 was operational) most of the drivers coming into F1 today, come from GP2.
2006
- Nico Rosberg (GP2 champion)
- Scott Speed (GP2 3rd)
- Robert Kubica (World Series by Renault Champion)
2007
- Hekki Kovalinen (GP2 2nd)
- Lewis Hamilton (GP2 Champion)
- Sebastian Vettel (Leading WSR before leaving)
- Adrian Sutil (Japanese F3 champion)
- Anthony Davidson (2nd in British F3, then Honda/BAR test driver for 4 years)
2008
- Timo Glock (GP2 Champion)
- Kazuki Nakajima (GP2 6th)
- Sebastien Bourdais (4 time Champcar champion)
- Nelson Piquet Jr (GP2 2nd)
2009
- Romain Grosjean (2nd in GP2 before leaving)
- Sebastien Buemi (GP2 6th)
- Jamie Alguesuari (Currently 2nd in WSR)
Also, Williams test driver Nico Hulkenburg, and Toyota test driver Kamui Koybashi are both currently competing in GP2.
So as you can see, the vast majority of F1 drivers are coming from GP2. So yeah, anyone who wants into F1, goes to GP2.
