From F1 Live:

Marc Gene in Valencia admitted he was disappointed when his Ferrari test colleague Luca Badoer was selected to replace the injured Felipe Massa.

The Spaniard is scheduled to travel to all the remaining Grand Prix in 2009 as reserve driver, but told German television ZDF that he is available if the Italian team wants to replace the struggling Badoer.

"I believe that I am prepared to race and it is obvious that I would have liked to have done it here before my public," Gene said.

Badoer, who at 38 is three years older than the 2009 Le Mans winner, has not been on the pace at Valencia and on Saturday qualified last by a big margin.

Gene is also more recently experienced than Badoer, having raced at Minardi in 2000 and then appearing to replace injured Williams drivers on a few occasions in 2003 and 2004.

"I remain at the team's disposal if they need me," he said at Valencia.

Gene would have been the better pick from the start, though I doubt he's the best driver Ferrari could get.

I still think Badoer deserves another chance at Spa, a circuit he knows, however I've looked at his lap times and, whilst he got in to the 1:40s, they were all over the place.

Badoer's pace fell off a cliff in the final chunk of the race. I would question his physical conditioning as well as his driving capabilities.

Indeed. Ferrari should arrange for him test the F2007 and build up some endurance.

F1live:
Ferrari on Sunday confirmed that Luca Badoer will contest his second Grand Prix for the Italian team this coming weekend in Belgium.

The team's 38-year-old test driver struggled notably at the wheel of injured Felipe Massa's car at Valencia, qualifying last and then finishing 17th while his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen took the other F60 to the podium.

Moreover, Badoer made mistakes throughout his first F1 weekend since 1999, featuring four pitlane speeding fines on Friday, being overtaken in the pitlane during the race, and incurring a drive-through penalty for crossing the pit-exit white line.

Even so, team boss Stefano Domenicali on Sunday said Badoer retains the drive for the second leg of the double-header at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend.

"Luca managed to finish the race, thus completing this learning weekend, which served as an introduction course prior to tackling the Belgian weekend in the best way possible, next weekend," he said in a team statement.

Badoer commented: "I am looking forward to Spa with confidence: it's a track I know and I will also be able to count on the experience gained this weekend."

Ferrari's chief engineer Chris Dyer said Sunday was another difficult day for Badoer, but noted the improvement he has made throughout the weekend. "It should be stressed how much he improved, continuously day by day, lap after lap," said the Australian. "We are confident that he will find himself in much better shape next weekend in Belgium.”

Looks like LB is in for Spa...

grr, this is making a mockery of f1, no in season testing. Using a full gp weekend as a practice for a driver whilst his team mate is competitive enough to reach the podium, if u want a competitive grid fia you must allow teams the means to compete.

But Ferrari are being ridiculously nice and kind.

But possibly replaced afterwards.
Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali has left the door open to replace Luca Badoer after the Belgian Grand Prix if the Italian does not manage to raise his game.

Badoer, standing in for the injured Felipe Massa, struggled at the back of the field at the European Grand Prix this weekend.

The Ferrari test driver, who had not raced since 1999, qualified and finished last in the Valencia race, although he had made it clear the event was just a test for him and is hoping to do better at Spa.

Although there were suggestions this weekend that Badoer would keep the seat until Massa is back, Domenicali suggested things could change after the next race.

"What I said exactly, to be precise, is that for us the first priority is to understand when Felipe Massa will come back," Domenicali told reporters after the race.

"For sure it is an important race for Luca Badoer next weekend. We are expecting a big jump from him and then we will see."

The Italian team boss admitted Ferrari cannot afford to have a car finishing at the bottom of the field, especially with the Maranello-based squad now in a close fight for third place with McLaren.

He did praise Badoer's fitness, however, after the Italian finished the race without problems.

"As I have said before, Ferrari cannot be satisfied with a car in last position," he said. "That is pretty clear, but we need to consider all the circumstances and everything that has happened. I think if you look behind it, for sure it was a difficult weekend for him.

"In terms of race pace, if you look to compare to the other young drivers, you can make your opinion.

"He did a great start and then he was touched from behind so he lost a place, and then in terms of rhythm - everyone was worried this morning about his health, worried about that it was not possible for him to get to the finish and that he would have to go to the hospital. But he was very good."

It does sound like Luca enjoyed himself today and we did see an improvement before the end of the race.

"So this is the first step. I drove, drove, drove, drove, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I did actually a big start and at the third corner I was 14th, and then a Renault kicked my bottom.

heh, although to be fair to badoer his career in f1 has kinda sucked he did well in lower tiers but then got stuck in back markers, and apparently he managed to get a Minardi in fourth place, before the car got overwhelmed with the new experience.

I cried when he cried. It was so sad to see him retire from such a great place. :(

Give Badoer a break, he's no championship winner or a race winner, but he is trying hard. Although he is miles off the pace he deserves to be given at least another chance. At least in Spa he will not only know the track, but this year's Ferrari a little better.

His racing future beyond that is no where near secure, however he deserves at least next weekend.

Poor guy, hope he doesnt feel bad/crushed. I know he didnt look soo good, but hope things work out for him to improve.

I mean he got freaking passed in the pit!! also I was thinking, if he is a family man , maybe hes not pushing as hard, might have things on his mind. Or maybe he wants to preserve the ferrari and not push/damage it not wanting to use up some of the limited tranny/engine resources.
