Former team principal Peter Sauber is believed to be working alongside BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen to evaluate a rescue package for the BMW Sauber Formula 1 team, following the German manufacturer's decision to withdraw from the sport at the end of the season.

A spokesman for Sauber told AUTOSPORT that the 65-year-old Swiss was looking at all possibilities to 'achieve a positive outcome' for the team.

Sauber, who sold the team in 2005 to BMW following more than 25 years as a racing car constructor in F1 and sports prototypes, told a hastily convened press briefing in Switzerland that he had vowed to do all he could to save the jobs of his former employees.

"I will do everything humanly possible," Sauber was quoted on Bild's website as saying. "I can't do wonders and I certainly do not want to be team boss on the pitwall again.

"The problem is that time is short and we need to find a solution quickly."

Citing a similar situation to the one faced by Honda, where Ross Brawn and Nick Fry brought together a financial deal to safe-keep what became the Brawn GP team, Sauber said the final decision remained with BMW's board of directors.

"I've told all my people that I will use all my contacts, but I can't guarantee anything. I am an advisor to BMW but ultimately only they can decide how to drive it forward."

Sauber told the press conference that offers of investment had already been received for a potential rescue package and that he had forwarded these to BMW.

"The best solution would be a Ross Brawn-type solution at Honda," he said. "You need at least ten years to amass a team which can produce a F1 car to the level required and if we let this team fall apart the chances are that Switzerland will never again have such an opportunity."

Sauber, who retains a 20 per cent shareholding in the team, remained confident a solution could be found to keep the Hinwil-based squad in F1, adding: "I must add that in my 17 years in F1 I have solved bigger problems."

Good stuff, hopefully something will work out because i think it's now too late to ask a completely new team to prepare a car for next season. I wouldn't mind at all if Theissen stayed in F1 as well. :)

or could Piquet Snr buy the team to give his son a drive.... :hehe:
Renault driver Nelson Piquet's famous father is a candidate to take over the Hinwil-based BMW Sauber team, according to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

It is claimed that 56-year-old Brazilian Piquet, a triple World Champion, may be eyeing Sauber in collaboration with Super Nova GP2 team chief David Sears.

"All I can say is that I like the name 'Piquet F1'. What do you think?" Piquet's son and namesake, who on Monday may be formally stepped down as Fernando Alonso's Renault teammate, is said to have reacted to the report.

Mentioned by the Swiss newspaper Blick as a possible Sauber saviour is Fritz Kaiser, who sold his original team share to Red Bull in 1999.

Joan Villadelprat is also a name doing the rounds after his Epsilon Euskadi application to debut in 2010 was turned down by the FIA.

"To take BMW's place would be difficult, but if a vacancy becomes available we will be there," he told the Spanish sports newspaper AS.

Villadelprat claims his team would be better placed than the new entrants Campos, Manor and USF1.

"In the US there are only 15 people working on their project," he said. "Manor is trying to sell part of the shares and of Adrian (Campos' project) I know nothing, but the rumours are that it is not doing so well.

"I am in permanent contact with the FIA and Ecclestone," Villadelprat added. "I am sure that we will be in F1, I don't know if it's in a week, a month or a year."

If Piquet buys the team and changes the name, I might hit him. They should put a clause in the sale contract that means the name has to remain Sauber (though it could have things attached to it like BMW did). :(

Nelson Piquet, three times world champion, is going to becomeone of the owners of BMW team for 2010, alongisde with Peter Sauber - who currently owns 20% of the team. This way, Nelson Piquet Jr.'s future on F1 is guaranteed. The driver will not race for Renault in Valencia, but his seat should be assured for the next season.

Piquet stated on his twitter two days ago "Well guys, I heard lots of rumours so I decided to say I like the name Piquet F1. What do you think?", after that he stated that he was "just kidding", but in fact, he said the truth. Nelso, his father wants to continue the work that was being done on lower categories, make his son compete on his own team. It worked this way on kart, on F3, on GP2, and it's going to happen on F1 now.

Today Renault announced Piquet is going to be dropeed in favor of Romain Grosjean for the rest of the season. It is acknowledge that Nelson Piquet (senior) is going to make an annoucement about his negotiation with Peter Sauber and BMW, the negotiations are very close to a deal. An agreemente was already been made with Ferrari, which is going to supply engines for the team, just like it was in 2005. Petronas it's the possible main sponsor, and can also have some share on the team ownership.

The name of the new Hinwill based team still undecided. Sauber's name is already being used (as in BMW Sauber), but with Piquet joining the team as an owner his name shall appear too, maybe something like Sauber-Piquet.

This was a rough (very rough, I'm sorry) translation of this article http://www.estadao.com.br/noticias/espo ... 2660,0.htm made by the respected Brazilian newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo"...

Some personal points about this.... Piquet has a good relationship with Bernie, Piquet owns a network of BMW concessionaires in Brazil, and yet, in Hungary he stated to the brazilian tv network Globo that he would reveal a very good surprise in the next days...

What do you guys think? It makes some sense to me, but I don't believe just yet... please share your thoughts on this :D

it smacks of... "I'm not good enough to go it alone so daddy is going to buy me a F1 team..."

As I said in another thread; I would much rather see a team like Pro-Drive take over BMW Sauber!

Can't say I really know Piquet Junior that well, as I don't really buy into rumors.

I like to rely upon my eyes and what I see, though sometimes these too can let me down.

I think it''s pretty clear from the Alonso/Hamilton Epic Saga V1-V17 2007. That Alonso likes number one status. This singular fact, and ignoring my doubts regarding Piquet Jnr. I look forward to seeing the afterbirth of this joining.

Perhaps Jnr will shine.

At the very least it's another angry driver on the grid with a vendetta. :)
