No, just plain dangerous to have backmarkers defending their position. It can be hairy enough as it is.

What, something like "they are there for a reason!"

well that, but mainly the speed differential can be quite high between front running cars and slower cars as well as the fact that they are likely to be involved in their own scraps for positions and it could bring in all sorts of opportunity for foul play.

the most dangerous thing about the idea for a lead car is coming up on a slower car that is about to go a lap behind and not knowing whether or not they are going to defend. The lead driver will need to get through as quickly as possible and will assume the car in front might black even if they have no intention of doing so. the lead car may then decide to bully the slower car out of the way just to be sure and it would lead to unnecessary aggressive driving from the front runners

I can see the fun in it, from an anarcists point of view, but not from an F1 point of view.

but remember, back markers should be allowed to race.
Why should they stop racing to let leaders through?

To prevent everyone crashing into each other, mainly. You forget that many of these rules were drawn up in an era when crashes were actually something to worry about, and not to be encouraged.

We have enough controversy in F1 thank you very much, all this rule would do is lead to even more BS controversy. Especially with engine deals from the manufacturers, for example a Williams letting through a faster Toyota while blocking a Ferrari, there would be constant complaints and appeals if that were allowed!

I think if Sir Frank/Patrick Head/Sam Michael were told by Toyota to let one of their cars through, they'd probably tell them to "get lost" or something worse than that (especially Patrick Head :D) and risk having their Toyota engines taken away from them unfairly.

But I don't think they would care.
