I think people are just being patriotic, its not about the sport its about their country.

That's exactly what it is. I'll confess I'm guilty of it when it comes to football. I can't stand it normally (entirely because I hate most professional footballers) but as soon as an internation game is on I'll be flying the George Cross. It's just annoying when it's my sports that people glory support

Na i understand what you mean. There is nothing wrong with supporting the "nation". However if you were to proclaim that you were an expert on Football then I would have a problem with that.

He was also a fresh and excting new driver so I can understand the influx of fans. We're predisposed to support people of our own nationality, if they happen to be very talented then that just makes it a lot easier.
