Anyways I think the Ashes is a perfect example of typical glory hunting.

If England win, how many people will celebrate and make it out to be the greatest achievement of all time... despite having never properly watched cricket in their lives?

And will they watch the next England test? Maybe go along to their local clubs? Nope.

It is typical, it was exactly the same with Rugby Union.

I completely agree. I remember watching all of the 2005 Ashes series and at the beginning most people couldn't care less what was happening, it was just the usual cricket crowd. As soon as they got a sniff of victory the entire country jumped on board (and the celebrations afterwards were a little embarrassing). It was a similar situation with the Rubgy world cup a few years back. I guess people just like to win and they get a bit patriotic whenever the opportunity arises, most don't really follw sport at all.

I get particularly annoyed when people who don't watch sport try to lecture me on it, it usually happens a lot when Wimbledon starts

Yep, but it is annoying. I mean take Formula One. I've said this time and time again, but so many "fans" got into the sport because of Hamilton. However they quickly deserted the sport once it became apparent that he could not win. I wonder if they will return now? Probably. I bet we'll get some new fairweather fans with Schumacher returning.

You are right, especially about Rugby. I mean once the dust settled, did England's victory really help the sport in general? I doubt numbers of people taking up the game increased significantly (if they did they surely dropped again.) It would be the same for Television figures.

I mean to be honest the biggest farse for Gloryhunting is the Olympics. I mean the World Swimming Championships are on RIGHT now... but how many do you think would actually bother watching that, despite having been "well into the swimming" when Britain were winning big in China?

Same with the cycling boys. I do watch a fair bit of road cycling (the big events such as the Giro and the Tour) but I don't act like i'm an expert, because i'm not. I'm not "blowing my load" (hahaha) over the success of Cavendish or Wiggins in this year's tour...

That's exactly what it is. I'll confess I'm guilty of it when it comes to football. I can't stand it normally (entirely because I hate most professional footballers) but as soon as an internation game is on I'll be flying the George Cross. It's just annoying when it's my sports that people glory support

Well the character Scotty was Scottish but the actor was Canadian, but judging by his surname he probably has Scottish ancestry.
