From F1 Live:

In the wake of BMW's decision to leave Formula One, the sport's remaining car manufacturers insist efforts are afoot to spice up the spectacle.

Not long after the Munich carmaker announced its decision to withdraw, Formula One Teams' Association secretary general Simone Perillo said work has begun to increase "the involvement of the fans" and to improve "the F1 show".

Mentioned on Wednesday was the possible introduction of a third car per team, but also rumoured is a FOTA-sponsored shake-up to the current knockout qualifying format.

It is believed FOTA's desired change would see five cars on track at a time, with the two fastest progressing to take on the next group of competitors.

The team alliance has no power to introduce rules however and FOTA proposals have traditionally fallen on deaf ears at the FIA.

This is what annoys me about FOTA. Overall, they've had a positive impact in Formula One, but they don't have come up with some stupid ideas from time to time. Qualifying is fine as it is currently. Leave it alone.

Bad idea. Its fine as it is.

Err, I don't really see the point of this.

All I want, is 3 stages of qualifying, and all of them including drivers running on fumes trying to set the fastest possible lap times those f1 cars can do.

 A- :censored: ing-men

What's next? Doing a qualifying lap on flat tyres or in first gear?

It's qualifying FFS, leave it as it is but without race fuel for Q3.

Although I am not a fan of the current qualifying system, I much preferred the 12 lap one hour session on low fuel free-for-all. I think FOTA's suggestion is simply ludicrous.

I like it the way it is now, in fact I would say that the change to the current qualifying setup is one of the last good changes I have seen in F1. If I were to change anything, it would be the heavy Q3, but obviously that will be different next year with no refueling in the races. I want P1 to be the fastest car with the best driver, I don't think that changing the qualifying format due to a slow team withdrawing from F1 is sensible, any change that would have allowed BMW to qualify better would not have been separating the fast from the slow cars... which is the primary purpose of qualifying.

Now if they really want to get the fans involved, they could institute some sort of text-message voting system, let the fans vote on who they think was the fastest! lol

LOL, Bernie would probably alter my original plan to in some way involve gold, silver and bronze coins.

What a crap idea, just get it back to the mid-90s format.

One hour, low fuel. (Except give them a minimum number of laps they need to set, so that we don't have the sitting in the garage phase)

Yes, don't want any Montreal 1997's again when nobody came out for nearly 45 minutes, my dad ended up falling asleep whilst all the camera could show was the Canadian crowd doing Mexican waves. :P

Another thing: FOTA continuously talk about getting the fans more involved in the sport; but how does them unilaterally attempting to change the fundamental parts of a Grand Prix weekend fit into that?

Part of the reason I support FOTA is because fans have been promised that their views would be consulted. I don't want to see one dictatorial regime (Mosley and Ecclestone) with crackpot ideas in for another dictatorial regime (FOTA) with crackpot ideas.
