Vodafone dropped Ferrari for McLaren, offering a £100 million sponsorship deal over five years in a huge gamble that looks as though it may have backfired in spectacular fashion. It left a Ferrari team who had dominated the World Championship with Michael Schumacher to move to a British squad emerging from one of the bleakest years in their history.

The company was ecstatic as McLaren immediately produced a winning car and a new star in Lewis Hamilton to partner Fernando Alonso, the world champion. But last night, Vodafone executives were in shock. A spokeswoman said: “We need to speak to the team and get a full report on what the way forward will be.â€

McLaren make a profit of 450 mil to 500 mil a year Dennis was quoted as saying and ultimately the winner of the constructors title will get 63 mil so it is said McLaren will only have to pay 30 mil daimler chrysler owns majority of mclaren im sure they will pitch in also!

Seriously doubt that it's profit of $450-500m - you meant to say budget or revenue or somtin' - not profit which is a very different thing. Also Daimler not too long ago shed the money-losing Chrysler division and that is now owned by some private consortium.

Besides: TV money not earned is still money lost - the hole that got burned in McLaren's wallet remains $100m unless it gets changed down the road.

i know you really want McLaren to go bankrupt dd but it aint going to happen!

sorry he said turn over that amount

Dennis: "Firstly, effectively, we will still have as an offset the revenue from the points earned to date. That will effectively half the size of the cheque we have to sign, if we ultimately accept this fine.

"But as you can see if you read our accounts, we turn over roughly $450-500 million USD a year, and we are debt-free, so obviously we are a very strong company with phenomenal growth.

"I jokingly asked [Mercedes motorsport director] Norbert [Haug] if he was going to chip in half, but we haven't really come to a conclusion on that negotiation."

No, it's not going to happen and I wouldn't want it to happen. It may level the playing field a bit though and make them think about saving money rather than wasting it on lavish PR centers, etc.

dont forget now on the basis of this guilty verdict mclaren has, ferrari will sue mclaren for another 100-300 million dollars for damages ferrari has sustained during these 7 months. also speculation is that mercedes benz will dump mclaren and begin a full factory team in 08. this will be the final blow to the disgraced mclaren team and an end of an era. pity but u know what ron dennis allways says we win together we lose together

Ferrari wont sue McLaren, i doubt they will follow the case against Stepney with any vigour now! And in a court of Law where this case should have been held not infront of the FIA the evidence at hand is insufficient to prosecute McLaren only Stepney and Coughlan for certain. Afterall this "new" evidence was just timing of emails, not what was actually said in the emails. HEIRSAY and CONJECTURE doesnt go down well in any court of law in any country.

HAHAHAHA Mercedes cant just dump McLaren they own majority of the team you fool!

McLaren will only pay 30Million in fines pending an appeal as the FIA said they will take into account the loss of revenue generated (63 mil) or so)from not winning the Constructors title.

Turnover, not profit. I can't find any figures for the actual profit that they make. Either way, $100 million fine plus not getting and revenues from tv is going to hurt. Plus some sponsors may not want to sponsor them any more, or may not want to donate quite so much money.

I'm not suggesting they will be bankrupted - they won't - but it will hurt. After all, $100 million is 20% of their entire turnover for the year and that has to come from *somewhere*

Yes, $100m is 'mucho mula' but in reality I doubt it will have a longstanding noticable effect to anything... yes it will 'hurt' but an 'empire' the size of McLaren/Mercedes will be able to stomach it...

I don't see Vodaphone dumping McLaren. They are likely well aware of the Machiavellian nature of the brass at Ferrari and the FIA and just as aware of Ron Dennis' reputation for integrity. Additionally, they will be weighing up the huge commercial benefits of having their name on the overalls of Hamilton and Alonso as well as the foremost car in F1.

Also, Ferrari's larger commercial interests are likely to suffer more from this fiasco than the McLaren team will in the long run. I also fail to see that there will be any kudos or gratification in being declared winners of the constructors trophy. In fact, when the dust settles, they will probably discover that they themselves are the net losers in this fiasco.

Uh, beg to differ - you Aussie garbage talker have called me all kinds of words.

Bud - just too bad that you have rocks for brains, otherwise there could be some good discussion had. What's your obsession with McLaren anyway? Contemplating to follow as Mika's successor and suck RD's sausage on a daily basis?
