Hi all,

I am curious about how much have Schumacher influenced the F60? and does anyone know if he has driven the F60 before? how much testing by Badoer/Gene?

Speculation as to who will replace the recovering Felipe Massa if he needs to sit out future races has already begun. The wildest rumour so far is that his friend Michael Schumacher, who won five world championships with Maranello-based Ferrari until his retirement in 2006, is a candidate.

"I heard that on Saturday evening," his manager Willi Weber told the SID news agency in Budapest. "That's only speculation and I don't see it happening.

"Ferrari already has two very good spare drivers who actually do little else than wait for an opportunity to go into the cockpit if one becomes free," Weber said.

He is referring to test drivers Luca Badoer and Marc Gene, who between them have contested nearly 100 Grand Prix. The latter, a 35-year-old Spaniard, was in Peugeot's winning Le Mans team last month. Gene is also present in Hungary as Ferrari's reserve driver.

However in 1999 when Schumacher broke his leg at the British Grand Prix, Ferrari overlooked its reserve driver Badoer and plumped instead for Mika Salo as the German's replacement.

Should Ferrari again select an external replacement driver, the freshest Grand Prix competitor is the Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais, who lost his Toro Rosso race seat after this month's German Grand Prix. The 30-year-old is also managed by Massa's manager, Nicolas Todt.

1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, whose father Gilles drove for Ferrari until his death in 1982, is also on the prowl for a drive.

(I am not saying Schumacher might stand in for Massa, but i am just curious how many mileage in between them schumi, gene, badoer?)

Do you really think Bourdais might have a once in a life time chance to drive for Ferrari?

Nikki Lauda backs Michael Schumacher to stand in for Felipe Massa

Lauda believes Schumacher, currently employed by Ferrari as an advisor, would represent the most logical choice.

"I've no idea how Michael is mentally," said Lauda. "But who else? Who is available? There is nobody available anywhere near Michael's performance. I was thinking about it, and there is nobody."

Lauda insists if he were Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, he would attempt to lure back Schumacher in a time of need for the team.

"He needs to take a decision," added Lauda. "For the whole business of Formula One, which is ill anyway because nobody is coming, he (Schumacher) would improve it by 20 to 30 per cent interest.

"But it is a question nobody can answer because nobody knows what Schumacher is doing. But who else is he going to ring?

"The test drivers are useless, and there is nobody else here if you think about it, but if he doesn't want to do it, the idea is finished in the same second.

"But if I was di Montezemolo I would call him.

If Schumacher wants to do it, and is up to it then he probably should get it ahead of the rookies, in terms of testing time well look at what Jamie managed to do today.

As for Bourdais Doesn't seem likley to me - if torro rosso choose a rookie over him, why would Ferrari?

Maybe they'll punt in a rookie who've they've been keeping an eye on, if they've really given up for 09 and with the testing ban. . .

Bourdais may be a good idea as he is at least in the zone as in he has been driving lately, all be it slowly. I think Schumacher isnt a wild bet either, nothin would surprise me. if its one of the above or someone else it will be interesting

Actually if he is in the car and flopping, won't that force Ferrari into developing? Can't have an example made of him.

Schumacher wouldn't want to risk his reputation, he's not going to be quick straight out of the box in a car he has no real experience of, having not turned a competitive wheel in an F1 car in over 2 years. I'm not sure he's that committed to Ferrari these days either, most of the staff he brought in have moved on now. Badoer seems like an obvious choice.

Alonso are also put in to the mix of list of candidates together with Badoer/Gene, due to the Renault suspension...

and if Alonso-Ferrari rumors are true during the Monza weekend, they might as well just do it now...get some testing out of the way for 2010 too

I would not like to see Schumacher make a shotgun return. It would cheapen his reputation. Lauda is correct about one thing, though: Ferrari's test drivers aren't up to the task.
