Winning determination in Donington for Rossi and Lorenzo

Thursday, 23 July 2009

World Championship top two targeting nothing less than British victory.

Both Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have been satisfied –if not ecstatic- with spots on the podium in 2009 when a win has not been possible. With the title fight at a critical moment and the bragging rights of being the final Donington Park racewinner on the line this weekend, the Fiat Yamaha pair appear to be settling for nothing less than a win on British soil.

“Last year I had a good race at Donington to finish second, but this year I really want to win! I’ve always said that Donington is one of my favourite tracks in the world – it’s fast and flowing but also technical – and also the UK is a very special place for me because for a long time it was my home,” says World Championship leader Rossi, seven times a winner at the track in his Grand Prix career.

”This is the last year we are going to race there which I am really sad about, but that makes me even more determined to try to win there, for me and for the fans who have always treated me like one of their own. I haven’t won there since 2005, which is too long and I would like to say ‘goodbye’ to the track in the best way. Last year we couldn’t take the fight to (Casey) Stoner but this year our bike is extremely competitive and we’re arriving leading in the championship so we’re in a very strong position.”

Lorenzo’s imperious form over the past month would normally be enough to take him to the top of the standings, but Rossi has been one step ahead at every turn. In better condition than at last Sunday’s race in Sachsenring, the Spaniard hopes to finally outgun his teammate in a straight fight for victory.

“Of course I am disappointed about the result in Germany but considering my physical condition I have to be happy about such a close second place,” says Lorenzo, who lost out to his Italian counterpart by just 0.099 last time out.

“I expect that all the British fans are hoping for another race like in Sachsenring, so we will see what we can do but of course I hope the result is reversed this time!”

Rossi and Lorenzo share six wins out of the previous nine races, and one of the two have been on the podium at every race this season.

Rossi
Pedrosa
Lorenzo

or

Rossi
Lorenzo
Pedrosa

Pedrosa was good here two years ago but he can be unpredictable. He can make brill starts but then fade towards the end of the race-hence my indecision over 2nd and 3rd.
