If you made the wheels square they wouldn't roll away when detached from the car. But they will never do that because it makes overtaking more difficult.

Kimi already tried something like that, his teeth fell out and the car came to bits.

...and driving

Just moving the car would be difficult. :hehe:

This would change car design fundamentally, and I do question whether there's actually a workable solution here. However, Surtees wasn't the first driver to die due to an open cockpit design - and recently only luck has seen other drivers escape serious injury in similar incidents. Barrichello and Hamilton have tonight raised their concern over recent events, and I'm sure the FIA and GPDA will look into the matter at their next meeting. :)

Oh, and there was once a Japanese concept car with triangular wheels. 8-)

although these events are rather simler and too close for comfort, its important to rember that Motorsport in general is still very safe compared to other sports around the world.

For example you are more likely to be injured playing Football, Rugby and Especialy American Football there has been over 300 deaths from american football in 25 years.

in F1 there has been 27 drivers killed since 1953.

Like Bud says Motorsport is Dangorus its printed on the ticket. But the FIA has done alot to minimize the danger but you can never eradicate it completely

Truly shocking that such a thing could happen twice in the space of a week.
It's such a freak thing to happen.
In the vast majority of incidents the imperative is for the driver to be protected sufficiently against the first impact, then the imperative becomes one of stabilising the the driver and getting him out of the vehicle without making things worse.
Perhaps a review of helmet design is a place to start, but enclosing cockpits will just cause more problems than it would prevent in my view.
I have in mind Kubicas shunt at Montreal, and the one that Martin Brundle had some years ago in Australia. Both drivers got away with them and they were much more destructive accidents.

It's an interesting question, and one which must be considered by the authorities. But, in the end, I suspect they will conclude the negatives of putting canopies on single-seaters outweighs the benefits. The accidents we saw in the last week are very rare, whereas incidents in which drivers need to bail out of their cars quickly or need urgent medical treatment are more common. It's a balancing act and a perfect solution does not exists. Drivers are aware that, although the chances of something bad happening are quite low, there is still a chance.

I think they should definitely consider better head protection.

Alex Wurz almost got his head collected a couple yrs back...
VERY often you see flying debris...
Massa could have definitely been killed.
Surtees...

It's time.

Well don't forget they brought in the raised sides after Wurz thats how reactive the FIA is when it comes to safty.

F1 has been going for almost 6 years and this has happened once as far as i can remeber in F1. (tom pryce) - please correct me if i'm wrong though.

So what was I watching before 2003?

think he meant 60 there :hehe:

think people are over reacting the odds of such incidences are rare i mean how many races have we had in the history of open wheel racing, not just in F1 where people have died due to head injuries from debris.

Fact remains no matter what, youll never make motorsport 100% safe! throw a canopy on an open wheeler and youll increase debris safety but decrease safety in other areas.
