Broken Jaw? where did that come from?

as for "something has to be done" what exactly can be done about random acts like this? its the nature of the motorsport beast.... its dangerous, the only thing that could stop something like this is staying home and not racing!

i was just speculating based on EJ saying he took a nock to the chin.

Also i'd say that it's probably his head (skull) that needs operated on.

it looks nasty eitherway

Too true, visions of Ayrton again, that was a hard strike looking at the damage to his helmet above his left eye. Jeez, I hope the wee fella's going to be ok. Rubens rushed over to the med centre when he found out

I had thoughts of Senna accident too. Massa sustained two concussive injuries just seconds apart, so skull fracture and hematoma would be of great concern. Let's Keep FM and his family in our prayers.

It was a freak accident, just like young Surtees. Thankfully these day's the cars are built to ensure drivers survivability in high speed impacts, but you can't legislate for freak incidents like Felippe's, such a small object causing that amount of injury and damage. Get well soon small fella

Thoughts go out to Felipe and his family.

I hope the surgery is successful. From what I've read and the pictures it sound like he is going to possibly undergo surgery for a chronic subdural haematoma which causes pressure on the brain. If that is the case then they will most likely do burr holes which allows them to remove the pressure on the brain caused by the swelling.

Massa undergoes successful surgery

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Saturday, July 25th 2009, 17:40 GMT

Felipe Massa has successfully undergone surgery for the injuries he suffered in his accident in qualifying in Hungary.

Ferrari said the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at the AEK hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was taken after being hit by a spring during Q2.

Massa had suffered a damaged skull and brain concussion, as well as a cut on his forehead.

The Italian team said a further update on his condition will be issued tomorrow morning.

Brawn confirmed the spring belonged to a damper from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car, weighing around 800 grams.

"We had a problem at the back, so we are still investigating and we haven't had the piece back from the FIA yet so once we get it back we can understand what occurred and then draw some conclusions," said team boss Ross Brawn.

"It is the first time we've had a problem with the car. The car has been really reliable and we are obviously looking all through the data to understand what caused the problem. It is hard to comment at the moment until we have studied everything.

"We put a new component on Jenson's car in qualifying just to be safe, but we are still studying everything that went on to understand what happened."
