Alguersuari plans to race on in FR3.5

By Pablo Elizalde Monday, July 20th 2009, 11:07 GMT

Spanish driver Jaime Alguersuari plans to continue racing in the World Series by Renault championship despite his move to Formula 1, according to team boss Trevor Carlin.

Alguersuari, who has been racing with Carlin in the Formula Renault 3.5 championship this year, will become the youngest driver to race in Formula 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend after being confirmed at Toro Rosso.

The 19-year-old will step up to grand prix racing after having finished fourth and third in last weekend's races at Le Mans.

Carlin said he was proud to see Alguersuari graduating to F1, and the team boss revealed the Spaniard intends to continue racing in the World Series when possible.

"We're very proud to see another one of our Red Bull drivers make the step up to Formula 1, and Jaime is following in the footsteps of Sebastian Vettel, who also made the transition from our World Series team to a race seat at Toro Rosso," said Carlin.

"It was clear for all to see in British F3 last year that Jaime is a great talent - and it says a lot about the quality of the series that the current British F3 champion is already making his F1 debut.

"It will be a tough learning curve for Jaime this year, but he is mature enough to learn quickly and make the most of this great opportunity. Jaime intends to continue racing with us in World Series this year, but obviously his F1 commitments will take priority."

1.Fernando Alonso on Wednesday dismissed any complaints about the age and inexperience of Formula One's youngest ever rookie, fellow Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari.

At 19 years and nearly four months, Toro Rosso's new recruit has only ever conducted two straight-line aerodynamic tests in F1 machinery. But Alonso, who also debuted at the age of 19 for Minardi in 2001, insisted he does not have "any problem" with Alguersuari's rapid ascent.

"All the signs are that he is very good," the 2005 and 2006 world champion told EFE news agency.

"If you are a Formula One driver it is because you are good, so no one should worry," Alonso added, explaining that young drivers represent the sport's next generation.

"I am in favour of beginning as young as possible. I congratulate him and wish him a splendid future," he said.

2.Jaime Alguersuari, the youngest ever rookie in Formula One, has revealed that his biggest worry for his debut race this weekend is his physical condition. His new team however are confident that their new recruit has the grounding needed to make the step up to F1.

"The most difficult thing will be the fitness," said the teenage Spaniard, who has replaced the ousted Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso.

Alguersuari may be young and inexperienced but he is no stranger to single seater racing. He is the reigning champion of British F3 and now racing in the World Series by Renault, which was also the stepping-stone to F1 for big names including Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel.

In the middle of June, he was racing at the Hungaroring, and while Grand Prix pilots were idle last weekend, Alguersuari was in action at the Le Mans circuit.

But as for this weekend's 70-lap Budapest challenge, he admits: "The race is much longer than I am used to." Fellow Spaniard Marc Gene concurs, believing Alguersuari may struggle in Hungary particularly in the area of neck strength.

Otherwise, Alguersuari is not overly worried, and mature enough to understand that although with no promises beyond the end of the season, Toro Rosso is allowing him to use the opportunity to prepare for 2010.

"In a lot of ways Formula One is the very top, but it is still a racing car," he told Spanish media on Tuesday.

"There are two pedals and a steering wheel, like all the others.

"I know that it is going to be very difficult for me to arrive immediately with the same speed as the others, but I am calm and the team is not putting pressure on me."

With a draconian testing ban in force, Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost believes Alguersuari's debut is an example of how Grand Prix careers will now begin. He rejects outright any fears the youngster might be a danger either to himself or his F1 rivals.

"Jaime has a similar amount of experience (for F1) as did Sebastian Vettel in 2006, when he drove for the first time (in practice) for BMW in Turkey," he told Sport Bild.

"And Kimi Raikkonen had substantially less experience when Peter Sauber gave him his chance in 2001," Tost added.

"Jaime is ready, I have no doubts. He is the most developed in the Red Bull junior programme, we are not going to put pressure on him and he will get better and better with every race as he learns."

Massa: Alguersuari too young for F1

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77146

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Thursday, July 23rd 2009, 15:22 GMT

Felipe Massa believes Jaime Alguersuari is too young and inexperienced to make his Formula 1 debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.

At 19 year and 125 days of age, Alguersuari will become the youngest ever driver to participate in a grand prix after taking over Sebastien Bourdais' seat at the Toro Rosso team.

The Spanish racer has only driven a Formula 1 car in straightline tests and arrives in Hungary having not completed a single lap in the STR4 machine.

Massa admitted he was surprised by Toro Rosso's decision to put him in the car, and the Brazilian reckons it is wrong for F1 and will not help Alguersuari as he is likely to struggle.

"For me he's too young," Massa told reporters at Hungaroring. "When I came into Formula 1 I was just 20 and for me it was also quite young. I was too inexperienced to ask what I needed from the car so I made some mistakes. For sure I had a very difficult car to drive, but anyway, it was not easy for me.

"But even for myself, and I can say it was too early for me, I did the whole winter (of testing), so I did many tests in Formula 1. He's never driven a Formula 1 car, or he has driven it in a straight line or whatever.

"For me it's wrong. It's not good for him. For me he can burn himself very quickly. Maybe he's an incredible talent and he will do much better than everybody thinks, but for me it's not good for him.

"I'm surprised a team would put a guy like this in the car. For me it's not right."
