It's a pity that the numbers are now so small, making them different colours wouldn't make a difference... this method is how Mansell and his famous "Red Five" were born.

I think the numbers have been shrinking ever since they changed the numbering system, you used to be able to associate teams with their car numbers such as Gilles' Ferrari number 27, Tyrrell number 3 and 4, etc.

Yep. I think a driver should carry their own number from where they finished the year before.

Yup, I suppose, for one, the sponsors wanted some sort of system though. I mean take Moto Gp atm. Rossi is champ and they could only stick the number one on the arm of his overalls. Clearly not good for marketing your product as number 1 eh?

Is it used to identify the cars at times when the driver's not in it, in the garages or in parc ferme?

EDIT: just thought they'll probably use the car number for that.

i too would like to see it just where the driver finished, irrespective of the team, or where the team finished, not the lead driver, and then the teamate as the next number!

Mention MotoGP to people who don't know it though, they think of Rossi, then Yamaha, so their sponsors are happoy.

i normally just look at the colour of the helmets to see who`s who in a team :D

I find it easier to remember who is the first and second driver rather that trying to remember wat evry drivers helmet looks like. Also, what do you do if can't see the driver?

How many shots do you not get too see the driver though?
