Mercedes-Benz is planning to supply three customer teams in Formula 1 next year, fuelling speculation that Red Bull Racing will make the switch from Renault.

AUTOSPORT revealed earlier this year that Red Bull Racing was eyeing a move to Mercedes-Benz, although the deal was complicated by the fact that the German car manufacturer was already supplying three outfits - one more than is allowed without special FIA dispensation.

However, following changes agreed by the governing body, engine manufacturers will now be allowed to supply four teams in total - something that Mercedes-Benz is keen to do.

Norbert Haug, the motorsport boss of Mercedes-Benz, confirmed at the Nurburgring on Saturday that talks were now taking place about finalising his company's plans for 2010.

"It is not finally decided," he said. "The World Motor Sport Council agreed to change that the limit is not two in the future, but four. We can get some refinancing from supplying three other teams, and this is the plan. So we are in negotiations. We could have three customer teams."

When asked if he could confirm that Red Bull Racing was one of the teams his company was talking to, Haug said: "I cannot mention any team names, but the positive thing is that we get quite a few requests actually – and hopefully it is justified. F1 in this respect is also a fashion, and our engine is seen to be a strong one, maybe the best one.

"Our guys in High Performance Engines did a particularly good job in the last couple of years. I am sure after Bahrain 2004 nobody would have asked us for an engine supply."

Force India already has a long-term deal for Mercedes-Benz engines, and it is almost certain that the championship leading Brawn GP team will extend its current one-year deal with the German car manufacturer.

Red Bull Racing's deal with Renault runs out at the end of this year and the team has indicated several times that it will take its time to decide which engine it will use next year.

Haug makes a good point about Mercedes getting its act together recently. Since outfit's internal affairs have been sorted, their engines have been second to none. I am, however, not sure about companies being allowed to supply too many teams. It's a double-edged sword for McLaren, as although it's nice the team will get more data etc, it does mean the McLaren's rivals will be more dangerous. And, in terms of the sport as a whole, it does mean there will be less variety on the grid. In other words, we are getting into standard engine territory.

Boring

Huh?

4 teams with the same engine

Better than 13 teams with a Cosworth engine...
This was always going to happen, Mercedes have the best engine in F1 and that isn't going to change for a few years so it was predictable that everyone will want one!!!

I wish they'd lift the engine freeze for a bit, that'd change things up. Actually, does anyone know when that is supposed to expire, or is it going on indefinitely?

2013. They shortened it last year to 5 years I think.

Yeah I know, and if all these teams want a Mercedes powerplant, it is going to make it quite boring actually.

i would limit any engine supplier to works+2 that way you still get a good spread, id be pretty peed off for renault to not be renault-renault so much so id have a hard job supporting them

Currently there is a limit, I believe. I remember Mercedes having to get permission from the FIA and from Force India to supply Brawn GP with engines as well this year.
