Alonso rubbishes Ferrari 'rumours'

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Thursday, July 9th 2009, 13:40 GMT

Fernando Alonso has rubbished speculation linking him yet again to the Ferrari team, saying he is not even in talks with the Italian squad.

The Italian and Spanish media has this week reported that Alonso is set to drive for Ferrari in 2010, probably replacing Kimi Raikkonen if the Finn decides to pursue a career in the World Rally Championship.

The Finn will make his WRC debut later this year in Rally Finland, a move the Italian press has seen as an indication that the former world champion is ready to leave F1.

Renault driver Alonso, however, denied he had any contracts with Ferrari, and said he had not even talked to the team about his future.

"They are only rumours. They have been happening in the last four or five years," Alonso told reporters in Germany.

When asked if he had been talking to Ferrari or if you had a Ferrari contract, he said: "No, and no."

Alonso did admit having a competitive car will be an important factor in deciding where his future lies.

"It is important, but it is not the end of the world," he said. "I am missing winning - there are no doubts. I want to win and to have a performing car as soon as possible, but I also understand that this is sport and it happens everywhere – not only in motor racing.

"It happens in tennis, it happens in NBA, in football. Sometimes you go up and down in your career. In motorsport, it is even more important to have the car and the package.

"We saw with Michael (Schumacher), maybe the greatest driver ever, two world championships in Benetton and then five years in Ferrari waiting because this is not only the human part, it is also the team and the package. So, I put myself in that part of my career, in stand by, and I am preparing myself very strong physically and mentally."

The two-time champion is yet to finish on the podium this season with Renault and is down in ninth place in the standings.

Ferrari has also struggled this year, having scored just one podium finish in eight race

From the reports of Alonso to Ferrari there's all this speculation about who's gonna be driving in red, but not a word about who's gonna fill the hole he's leaving at Renault and take on the challenge of being team mate to the mighty Piquet.

Grojean for one of the seats. If Alonso leaves I'd expect Piquet to be retained.

I wouldn't - under any circumstances.

Well I dunno, you have to look at who Renault could draft in. As much as Piquet has had a very poor career so far, he's kinda improved over the last 2 events...

Who was that other guy who (most of the time) only seemed to drive well when it was time to sort out contracts/drives for the following season? Pretty sure his name was Ralf...? :hehe:

Same here. Alonso continuously laments his time at Renault, though, at the request of the public relations branch of the team, there is some intermittent praise. Alonso is certainly looking for an exit from Renault, and his preferred destination is Ferrari. Alonso quoting Schumacher's career may even have some significance in this matter, too.

Yup, although i guess that is to be expected... although i have seen/read other interviews where he has said some quite cryptic things regarding a move to Ferrari, which makes me think that something is definitely going on.

From F1 Live:

To the English-speaking media on Thursday, Fernando Alonso swore blind that reports of a looming Ferrari switch are not true.

The Spaniard however also gave interviews at the Nurburgring to reporters in the native tongues of Spain, France and Italy.

To the Spanish sports newspaper AS, he admitted that Ferrari is an option for the future.

"I have often said that I want to be in a car that allows me to win. In 2005 and 2006 everyone dreamed of the Renault, but in the last ten seasons Ferrari have won more championships than us.

"That's why Ferrari is the option that everyone has in mind, because of their successes of the past decade. You want to go where you will have the best car," said Alonso.

In another newspaper, El Mundo, the 27-year-old insisted he has "always been ready to go to a team like Ferrari."

"What I mean is that I am not demoralised, I am not sad, I am simply in delay.
It's like in the Tour (de France). I'm now in the stage where I am reserving my energy for the mountains, because it's then that I am going to be on top," Alonso added.

He refused to predict how his native country would react to the official news that he is switching to the famous Maranello-based team.

"I don't know, I am not a fortune teller. It is necessary to have this race in Germany, to see what happens in the championship, and what happens in the future is difficult to predict," said Alonso.
