- 10 Jul 09, 00:19#131708I am a wrench head, and I am a speed freak, and I am knowledgeable about cars, and a fast car enthusiast. I own a copy of every Road&Track since June 1982. I have always kept abreast of the cars I lust after and could tell you specs you didn't even know existed on your favourite supercar or musclecar. However I chose for my first car a 3 cyl 48hp Suzuki Forsa(manual). That was in 1986(not a typo, 1986). Before that I drove my parents' Mustang, which having 6 cyls and a slushbox was actually slower than my Suzuki. I was young and stupid but somehow wise enought to know that a pimplyfaced car nut like me will surely kill himself(or die trying) within days of buying what I really wanted. Since then I have not bought any truly fast cars. Not counting all the years of no money where I would subsist on a string of $300 gems not caring what I get, my choices have reflected my enthusiasm without being too quick. Usually the sport model of a given model, like my Dodge Lancer ES(manual), Ford Escort GT(manual) or my current Chevy Lumina LTZ 3800. Much quicker than the lower models but not enough to be a danger, or even attract the police. I wouldn't buy a lower Lumina or a lower Escort. But I also wouldn't buy a ZR1, as much as I would love to have it!
Anyway the only reason I mention all that is that I have managed to keep the enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge on such matters separate from the reality of life and driving(and buying a conveyance) in real world situations such as commuting and child shuttling.
