Here is a clip of last nights Top Gear. It's a 1 mile drag race between a Bugatti Veyron and the McLaren F1 super car.

I have to say, this is slightly closer than it should be as Top Gear aren't aloud to knock the traction control off on the Veyron, causing it to bog-down, however it's still a quality race between two of my fav cars of all time!

For a moment there I actually thought the 15 year old car was going to win. I wonder if it would be the same story if the Veyron was manual and traction control turned off.

They Veyron would obviously win because of it's sheer bhp in a 1 mile drag race but given manual gearboxes in both cars, would the F1 still win over 1/4mile?

Thats a very tough question. In theory the veyron should beat it over a 1/4 mile with traction control off, however in the real world I really couldn't say . . . but I will . . . the McLaren by a nose.

The thing I love about the Veyron is the fact that it's relentless in it's acceleration. At 100mph it's only JUST getting into it's stride!

Awesome little race too;
I still think the McLaren is allot better, with the pure fact of if he didn't do the little change? He would of been trailing....So the McLaren to me is the bad-ass motor

Finally, Top Gear have done something worth while. I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the Veyron. Despite it being much more recent, it really struggled against the McLaren for a good chunk of the race. I do wonder how both cars would do on a range of circuits. Around twistier circuits, I'd say the McLaren would win. It just goes to show the McLaren F1 is and will always be a spectacular car, and I dare say with a few tweaks it could be even faster.

As sublime a work of engineering the Veyron is, I'd still rather have the McLaren, for it would provide a much more entertaining driving experience, minus enumerable electronics.

If you put the old McLaren F1 on the Top Gear test track it would probably lap it quicker than the Veyron, because it is lighter and has better acceleration which will be a big help negotiating the corners, when the Stig did the lap in the Veyron it looked quite slow and heavy in the corners.

And like Hammond - and alo McLaren Fan just now - said, the Veyron was created as a technical demonstration of what can be done whereas the McLaren was designed for the driving experience.

Thats pretty embarrassing for the Veyron if you ask me. Even though the Veyron is faster, I'd still rather have the McLaren.

Shed a ton of unnecessary weight from the Veyron and it would piss all over the F1, oh wait . . . . .

If I was on a track day; I'd take the McLaren; if I were travelling across Europe; I'd take the Veyron!

why would a manual gearbox make a difference? i can guarantee that box in the Veryon would be quicker at changing gears than any driver!

It's funny, people still take Top Gear on face value. Top Gear would've done this drag race around 10 times, and then taken the closest one race and edited it all together in an office.

The honest truth is, the Veyron would walk all over the F1 in a drag race. The clip that top gear showed would've involved the Stig getting a great start, and Hammond getting a sub average start. I'm not favouring the Veyron, personally I prefer the lightweight pure racer that is the McLaren F1. But we're talking about a car that produces a ridiculous 1001 BHP (actually lower, VW smudging figures ) The Veyron will reach 100mph in 5.3 seconds. Compared to F1, which is 6.3. So the Veyron is already a second quicker by 100mph.

Anyone remember this little stat. It takes the same amount of time for the Veyron to go from 0-200mph and the McLaren F1 to go from 135mph-200mph.
