Erm..

Kimbolton (Northampton) - April 10/12th
glan-y-gors (North Wales, Corwen) - May 15/17th
Rowrah (Cumbria) - June 26/28th
PFI (grantham, Lincolnshire) - 17/19th July
genk (Belgium) 13/16th August
Whilton Mill (Daventry) 2/4th October

Would be cool if any members did come! :P

I'd be in the team awning most of the time, so not too sure whether they'd let you take too much "behind the scenes" footage :P And at FKS they don't even allow spectators on the grid :( I'm only allowed my team manager and one mechanic on the grid :( But there are lots of hospitality things going on and it's usually top notch racing xD

What a crazy weekend!

We arrived at the circuit on Friday at about 7.30 (after an 7 hour drive) big queues to get into the circuit.. but at least it was dry.

We went to the team awning and got the kart setup to go out on circuit for just after 10.00. I went out and I was really quick, overtaking someone every couple of laps (which surprised me with the competition and my lack of experience, and it was my first time on circuit). I was about 0.3 off the fastest, which gave us optimism for the rest of the day. Then the rain came, and we really struggled to find a setup, we tried lots of different things but we still couldn't get the kart setup.. So we just needed to wait until Saturday to go out and try our best.

The Saturday format was: 3 lap warm up, Timed Qualifying, Pre-Final, Final.

Again, it was wet and we struggled a lot in the warm up, and made a few minor changes for Quali.

We had to Parc Ferme our tyres all weekend, and we only got them a few minutes before we were out on track. This caught us out in Quali, as we didn't have enough time to check our widths or pressures.. So I was extremely slow, I think I was about 35th or something, which meant I was in the "Pre B final" which was the final for the people who didn't make it into the top 20.

I started P15, was taken out at turn 1 (down to 24th) and came back to 15th, only 0.2 off the winners fastest lap. As I finished 15th in the Pre-final, it meant I would start the final from 11th, as the top 4 from the "Pre B final" had progressed to the "pre A final". Again for the "B final", the top 4 would go to the A final, so I had to do the business. From 11th, I was T-boned at turn one (AGAIN!) and went to about 16th, but fought back to 7th.. so the team were pretty pleased.

And Now on to Sunday. The format was different, only a 10 min warmup session, Qualifying and straight to the Finals (no Prefinals..)

I was awful in the Warm up, kart was really bad as it was still wet and we tried some things that just didn't work out.

Things turned dry and I was pleased as we were happy with the kart for the dry :P I went out for Quali, but only got a lap :( Engine just died on me and when I found the problem I wasn't allowed to restart.. Meaning I would be starting last in B final (22nd) and with no Pre final I needed to make it to 4th to progress.. It seemed extremely unlikely..

So I went out last, and I had nothing to lose. Went into turn 1 in last, went to the outside... there was a coming together but I avoided it and was in about 18th at the end of lap 1. After that was incredible, I sliced through the field so quickly, and got up to 7th! But, like usual.. Bad luck struck again.. and my battery disconnected with 3 laps to go.. leaving me 2nd last.. It was annoying.. even coming through the field I was matching, and sometimes catching the leaders.. and was 3rd fastest!

It was a real shame, I was fastest in my team (at a track I'd never seen before) but lady luck wasn't with me..

But I'll be back for Larkhall this weekend, and I might be testing the 2009 barrel (not released until May) which is the good thing about being a team driver :D

Good report Sammy ol' boy and hey thats racing for you right? Hopefully the new chassis will resolve some of the issues your currently having. I wish you could atleast record the full Finals race to share with us.

Good luck mate your well on your way imho  ,

I was at Larkhall this weekend.. Big grids because it's the NKF, 21 on the grid.

Saturday - Testing
I bounced back from yesterday by going fastest in first session, setting my best time ever of a 39.4

I went out again after changing a few things and was just as fast, but went for a move that wasn't really on and I launched myself on top of another kart. No damage done to me, not so sure about the other dude

Then I moved to the team motor, fitted with the new 09 barrel (not legal until May). I needed to take it easy for 5 laps, but once I gunned it was incredible, posting a 38.9 and quicker than some Seniors. Engine needs a bit of tuning for the next British round as it didn't have as good a bottom end, but the top end was brilliant. I was 0.1 up on the straight alone!

We went out again on it but couldn't improve on it, but still fastest by a mile, as nobody else has their hands on one yet. It's great the team got a hold of one (advantage of being with an established team) and I'm one of the first in the country to test it

We went back on our race engine for the rest of the day, and I was still very quick, definately top 3, and I had pretty poor tyres on.. so we were optimistic for Raceday

Sunday - Race!

For first heat I started 20th (outta 21) so just held back at the start expecting a smash. Unfortunately nothing happened, but I was up 10 17th on lap 1, and as I went for a move I did the same as yesterday and went right over someone.. into the tyre wall. I got going again but about 3/4 of a lap down. Thankfully there was another collision so the pace flag was brought out, so the man in the front has to act as a Safety Car. I joined the end of the snake in last, with 2 laps to go. It went green and at the end of the race I was 9th, a remarkable comeback drive, with 2nd fastest lap.

2nd heat I was 10th, but got binned at turn 1 and rolled backwards down the hill to last place. Again, I worked my way back up, this time to 12th. I had the fastest lap, and I was a real threat, but a bad result ruined my chances of a good result.

For heat 3, I started P3. Made a good start and was up to 2nd, but was replaced to 3rd in the next lap. Then he blocked the rest of the race, holding me up a lot.. but I got by him on the last lap, to secure a P7 grid slot for the final.

I started P7, got a great start and was upto 5th. Next lap it was 4th, and the lap after it was 3rd. I was a bit back from the front two. But I reeled them in, just 0.7 off the leader at the finish. I was 2nd fastest, faster than both of the guys ahead of me, including the winner, who is 3rd in Britain.

The damage was done in heat 2, I was fastest but couldn't convert it into a top 5. But there's always next month, 3rd to 21 was a good day at the office

EDIT: People are now saying that I'm cheating.. (a couple of people especially, who were my "best mates" a few months ago.. how times change! ;)

Thought I'd give a little update, since it's been a while! :)

During this time I've had another round of the Formula Kart Stars series - more terrible bad luck!

Engine problems stopped me from setting a time in Quali, meaning I started at the back for the Pre final. From 15th I moved up to 7th, but was in a collision.. but recovered back to 10th. This gave me a grid slot of P6 for the "B Final" with top 4 being promoted to the "A final". Well, I made a cracking start, and was upto 2nd after lap 2, and definately the man on the move. But then, my axle came loose! I've no idea how it happened, but it meant handling was affected, and the axle moved the disc brake, so it was hitting against the pads.. meaning no real straightline speed or acceleration :( I ended up 8th, which was pretty disappointing given my early pace.. And the pace I should was also impressive, as I'd never driven the track in the dry before the Final.. as it was wet before.. and I was at an English Exam instead of the Friday test day which had both wet and dry. So I left the track again wondering what might have been.

Then, at the weekend just past.. the breakthrough - My first English podium, at the Rowrah circuit in Cumbria!

It was a good weekend, with the FKS series there in just 2 weeks, it was a good preperation.

I was 2nd or 3rd fastest on Saturday, but it was so hot, and we struggled with too much grip on the kart, even on really old tyres, and the same was to come on Sunday.

In heat 1 I DNF'd after my chain came off, after being in a comfortable 4th place from starting 8th out of 11, so it would have been a good result.

heat 2 I started 8th finished 5th, with the 3rd fastest lap to boot, so it showed promise, but we still really struggled with grip.. and this was also due to the fact my team manager was away at another race meeting with the team, so I couldn't rely on him!

I started P2 for the heat 3, and I ballsy move saw me lead after a move around the outside of the hairpin, and I led for 2 laps before being deposed down to 4th, where I would finish. My tyre pressures were a little too high, so I dropped back after about lap 3. After the heats it looked like P4 would be where I'd finish, as the 3 in front of me consisted of two locals, and a driver who was 9th in Formula Kart Stars at the minute!

I lined up 5th for the final, and after turn 1 I was through to 3rd. I came under pressure from a local driver, who had a scrimmage at turn 1, but looked tbe right on me again. Then I got a lucky break, the driver was involved in a collision on lap 2.. and I had a 3.5 second gap now to the driver.

But then, he started to close.. rapidly. he was taking about 0.4 out of me A LAP, and at the finish I was panicking a bit, and it affected my race performance.. and I finished the race only 0.3 ahead of the local driver.. who was easily the fastest man on the track!

It was a very good result, my best at the track by a mile! And it just shows how unlucky I've been at FKS, that the winner (9th in Formula Kart Stars just now) was only 0.2 faster than me in the fastest lap times, yet hes almost 25 places higher up than me in the championship!

I look forward to the FKS round at Rowrah in 2 weeks time, I'm not saying I'll win.. But I definately expect to make it to the A final for the first time.. I just need no mechanical problems! :D
