I know this question will piss people off but, in the F1 cars i thought they were all Automatic? so why were they talking about a clutch controlled car in the Brawn car??

Or is it certain cars? Explain Please :banghead:

The clutch is still necessary for starts and getting away from pit stops.

No. The clutch is operated by a pair of paddles on the steering wheel. :)

They're not automatic, they are automated manuals. Now that may sound like pretty much the same thing, but they are different. An automatic gearbox uses an epicyclic geartrain and a torque converter to drive the wheels. An epicyclic geartrain is far less efficient than a conventional gearbox and a torque converter, being a fluid coupling adds its own inefficiency to the set up.
An automated manual (or semi automatic, as they have become known) uses exactly the same components as a normal manual 'box. The difference is that the clutch and gear selection are carried out by hydraulics under computer control when the driver pulls a lever.

But if there are 3 pedals, where is the cloutch situated?

As I posted above, the clutch is operated by paddles on the steering wheels, located either above or below the gear shift paddles.

Thanks :)

I wonder if the old manual gearshifters were back, would it make it a more exiting f1...

I think they should revert to an old school H-gate manual gearbox & clutch pedal.

Yes. There would be more room for driver error as it would actually be possible for them to miss a gear and give the driver behind a chance to actually overtake. Of course, it does then fall under the technology versus driver-ability argument. This is one area where I'd actually go for testing the driver over having the latest technology.

The prime reason for a controlled clutch and gear selection is to avoid the driver over revving and destroying the engine... too much money at stake

Hmm I think that is 70's they had a system for preventing wrong downshifting - for example you couldn't shift from 3 to 1.

Lewis had Torque control paddles, Gear Paddles and Clutch Paddles on his MP4-23 last year.

that would be abit of a mission to control..
