Litespeed to use Lotus name for F1 bid

By Matt Beer Sunday, June 7th 2009, 03:12 GMT

Johnny Herbert, Lotus, Pacific GP 1994Litespeed has announced that it will use the historic Lotus name for its attempt to enter Formula 1 next season.

The Norfolk-based Formula 3 squad's founders Nino Judge and Steve Kenchington are both former Lotus engineers, and have received permission from Lotus name rights-holder David Hunt to use the evocative title for their F1 bid.

"Team Lotus is synonymous with great British engineering and F1 innovation, such as the Lotus 25 being the first monocoque chassis in F1 and the introduction of groundbreaking sponsorship, both of which easily demonstrate why ex-Lotus personnel would want to bring this championship-winning name back to the formula," said Judge.

"Litespeed was born from a similar British background - a factor that was at the core of Colin Chapman's beliefs and subsequent success.

"David Hunt has been the custodian of the name for so many years and we thank him for entrusting us not just with its safeguard but, more importantly, its development in the racing world of tomorrow."

The team had already revealed that former Tyrrell, Jordan, Renault, Toyota and Force India technical boss Mike Gascoyne had begun design work via his MGI organisation. Gascoyne also welcomed the news that the project would use the Lotus title.

"I am Norfolk born and bred," said Gascoyne. "For me to continue my F1 career under the banner of the Team Lotus name and help to bring it back to its deserving place in the world championship is a fantastic feeling and something that I am extremely proud to be doing."

Litespeed will base the Lotus F1 project in the RTN facility in Norfolk previously used by TOM'S and which later housed Audi and Bentley's Le Mans projects.

The team has also recruited Johnny Herbert, who raced for Lotus in F1 from 1990 to 1994, as a commercial ambassador and driver manager.

Founded by legendary designer and innovator Colin Chapman, the original Lotus team moved into F1 in 1958 after success in sportscars and Formula 2. It would go on to earn seven constructors' titles and take Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti to drivers' championships.

Its last race wins came with Ayrton Senna in 1987, after which its fortunes went into sharp decline - the famous team eventually closing its doors at the end of an uncompetitive and cash-strapped 1994 season.

Lotus is the third famous name to be associated with a prospective new F1 entrant for 2010, with other start-up projects having already announced plans to use the March and Brabham titles.

Interesting. It appears that the classic names are returning, but not necessarily in the forms of classic teams. I wonder if this is part of an attempt to make F1 feel a little more like F1 even if big names leave?

Interesting, Mr. Bond... :scratchchin:

I tend to agree with what Mclaren Fan said in the other thread about bringing marques back, in that i would also like to see true links with the original team rather than just ownership of a name; that said, for me i wouldn't be surprised if i just forgot all about it once the car turns up with a Lotus badge on it's nose. :cloud9:

There's gonna be some tears in a few weeks, everyone is saying they have the resources and backing to make a credible F1 team, yet most won't even get a chance it seems...

Would it still be Lotus :(

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Lotus F1 cars running in F1 again. It would be a dream. It's being run by two ex-lotus engineers, but on the other hand it's still sorta a new team just with a fancy name.

But we'll see. They have a fair bid to enter F1, with Johnny Palmer, and Gascoyne in there. Plus they have plans for a Norfolk factory. But there's no clear indication of where the money will come from. There is still some teams out there, like Prodrive who already have established workers and factories etc. It's still a bit hard to see the entry being excepted, but theres still every chance

It's a very odd situation, with not just "Lotus" but also new teams rumoured to be using the "March" and "Brabham" names. Could it be that Max has let it be known on the quiet that using a historic name would increase a team's chance of an entry being accepted. If there was a really big bust up with the established teams, which looks very unlikely, then Max could at least claim that the loss of certain historic names has been balanced by the return of several historic names to the sport.

this has got to be one of the more credible teams who are trying to enter, they already have a know and respected F1 designer working for them. Plus an ex F1 driver t ohelp things along.

I'm absolutely horrified by this development. May this never happen. Moreover, if Mosley is using this as a plan to get a few classic names back in Formula One, it certainly won't win me over.

I have to agree. Lotus were lotus and Colin Chapman will not be designing this car. It will not be a lotus. Doesnt feel right.

At least Peter "Mansell will never win a race as long as I have a hole in my arse" Warr won't be in charge. ;)

I dont think Mosley is trying to bring in classic names because he was the one saying F1 needs "new teams." Mosley is such a douche...

Colin did not design Senna's Lotus yet it was still considered a Lotus right?

This is a difficult one. Ever since seeing Ronnie Peterson in a JPS at Silverstone, Team Lotus has always been THE grand prix team for me.

Colin Chapman died in 1981 just before he was about to be dragged into the de Lorien debacle. Team Lotus continued without him under Peter Warr, and won several races with de Angelis and Senna before it ground to a halt in 1990 due to lack of funds. Group Lotus and Team Lotus had had nothing to do with each other for many years, with by 1990 only tenuous links between the organisations - GM ownership of the car company saw to that. It was taken over by Peter Collins, but from 1991 the purists do not see the cars entered as 'real' Lotus. When the Collins team finished in inglorious circumstances in 1994, the name was stuck on a Pacific, and that was definitely not a Lotus. Out of this chaos, David Hunt ended up buying the rights to the name - and his dealings with subsequent interested parties have not led one to believe he was acting as a 'custodian'.

I would be delighted to see Team Lotus back on the grid, but there needs to be some DNA from the old Team Lotus. Good to see it is Lotus men behind it, that it will be based in Norfolk and the are talking at least to Group Lotus. Lotus themselves have never been flush with money but what they do have what they have always had - bright people. That is the real Lotus DNA. Mike Gascoigne is an excellent choice to lead the technical group, but this is a turnkey organisation, more akin to Pacific than Brawn. This will mean that it will be a long time before it moves from the back of the grid - Force India are backmarkers after all and they are a well funded team that Mr Gascoigne used to run last season.

I only want to see Team Lotus return if they are a serious effort with serious intent to return the Lotus name to it's place of pre-eminence. Unfortunately, Formula 1 has moved on so much since 1994 and they'll have no Mclaren Technology Centre to help them. Good luck to them anyway.

I want to see lotus back, I think Chapman would of liked the way that Gazza works. Plus his spirit will live on with the other to guys who where part of the original team.

GO TEAM LOTUS
