Organisers reveal GP3 details

By Pablo Elizalde Monday, May 4th 2009, 09:57 GMT

The organisers of the upcoming GP3 series have announced details of the new championship that will kick off in 2010.

In a statement released on Monday, the series bosses said the design and development of the Dallara-designed car are on schedule.

The car will be powered by a 280HP engine based on a road car 2L Turbo, developed by Renault in its Viry-Chatillon factory.

"We based the GP3 Series on the GP2 Series successful philosophy: produce a competitive car, create a cost effective series, racing alongside the Formula One calendar and providing an exciting show," said GP3 boss Bruno Michel.

"I am really pleased to welcome our partners to the GP3 Series and I am confident that together we will be able to achieve the same level of high quality competition that we reached in GP2 for the past four seasons."

The organisers also announced that Italian maker Pirelli will be the championship's tyre supplier, in what will mark a return to open wheel racing for the marque.

"Pirelli are delighted to be involved with the launch of the prestigious GP3 series, which represents a re-entry for us into the world of open wheeled racing," said Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery.

"Working with premium teams and the future champions of the motorsport world is an exciting challenge and one where we will be putting our 100 year plus competition experience to use in providing a reliable and stable product for use in the varied circuits and conditions we will face during the season".

How many more series are needed?? :S

First GP2, then F2, now GP3. I wonder if someone's trying to replicate the 125, 250, 800cc stepping stones of MotoGP.

I wonder how much this series will cost, whether it can compete with F2.

To me the whole F2 structure seems a bit bollocks and to me it seems to come down to to only really having one team that runs 26 cars.

ust another scheme to make more money? I think F3 is more competitive than GP3? now F2 aswel? we will need a 2 tier F1 at this rate!

...I don't get it. Why do we need a GP3? Was 2 not enough? :hehe:

Exactly...it's a joke for more money.

Expect anything and everything when Bernie is using what's left of his brain.

Formula One is too small! it's like 4 million ants trying to eat the one bit of fruit! Formula one is becoming more accessible, but then you look at the amount of teams? They need to do the CAP! so we can have more teams! I think we honestly need 20 teams. At the end of the day F1 will be chickens shuffling around in a small box, NO WERE TO GO! we will have to wait for one to leave so another can enter. It's not based on talent any more, it's about business. End Of.

:yes::yes:

Totally agree, it was great with nearly 40 cars and Friday morning pre-qualifying. It would add some excitement for those who turn up to the track on Friday morning. :thumbup:

If GP3 isn't very successful I will laugh at the fool from Pirelli who described this new series as "prestigious".

"Prestigious"??? :confused:
GP3 season costs €600,000? That is ridiculous as F2 only costs €200,000 and you get your super license and you also get a Test at AT&T Williams F1 is you win or come 2nd or 3rd in the final standings?

But Com'On, we have so much and the ideal track route is
Beginners;
Formula BMW · Formula Ford · Formula König · Formula Opel · Formula Nissan · Formula Renault · Formula Super Vee · Formula Toyota · Formula Vee · Formula Volkswagen ·

Then after that you enter Formula Three - If you win the WDC you gain your super license so why enter GP2? -
Euro Series · Italian · International · German · All Japan · Spanish · Asian · Australian · Sudamericana ·

Then Either ;
World Series By Renault · GP2/GP2 Asia · Formula 2 · Indy Series Light ·

Then;
Formula One · Indy Series · DTM · NAS-CAR ·

We have so many different tracks to get there, we don't need a feeder to GP2? Because the feeder to Gp2 is F3! To be honest you don't need to win the GP3 series to get to GP2, you just need to be able to close a business deal? if you have the backing from companies that are willing to pay nearly €1.6 Million Euro's then your okay and set, Then you just have to dazzle from there or be on a drivers program, then F1 is a year away? or then just get F1 experience and move to the land of opportunities - USA - Were getting into Indy is allot easier! Motor Racing is not about competition, it is business, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs there head testing, it's about funding a dream then you just have to close deals and reach the top, Adrian Sutil will have made allot of money from Force India, for doing what? Cruising round a track for a little while? Then just get good deal from a big team like Alonso did, then look at him, he has made around $80,000,000 in total from all his seasons! Kimi Raikkonen over $100,000,000! Kimi Raikkonen is the least experienced! he ust got lucky and jumped from Formula Renault to F1! Now days you have to jump from Gp2?
