I'm a big tennis fan, but I decided to go out today and enjoy the good weather with a barbecue and a few glasses of wine; I wasn't going to sit in and watch Nadal stuff Soderling. Later in the day, a friend sent me a text message to say Nadal was out. I could not believe it, and I have to say my first thought was about Federer's chances of winning. In theory, Federer's chances of winning are better; but there is still a couple of dangerous players left in the tournament (Murray, Tsonga, et al.), most of whom will see this as their best chance to win not just at Roland Garros, but a grandslam; so they will be going all out for victories. The pressure on Federer has gone up several notches, too, as many now see him as the favourite; it is his best chance of winning the French Open in a long time; he will equal Sampras' record of fourteen majors; and he will complete his career grandslam, something which has increasingly looked unlikely. I really, really, really want to see see Federer win at Roland Garros, but I'm trying to get too excited. Hopefully, Federer is doing the same.
