we all read with growing concerns the dispute between FIA and some F1 teams about the 44 million euro budget limits per team from 2010

well, I believe to have find a simple and brilliant solution to quickly solve this problem and avoid that many big F1 teams reject to sign up for 2010

the proposal (on which, I believe, FIA and all F1 teams may agree) is simple: it's a contribution of big teams to small teams based on the excess of budget of the big teams

in other words, the big F1 teams can spend in 2010 nearly the same 2009 budget, but over a given amount (e.g. 200 million euro) they must pay an amount equal to the extra-budget to the small F1 teams

There is nothing wrong with the budget cap idea itself, but the way in which the FIA are trying to impose it. Two-tier Formula One would be a mess, Formula One and a breakaway series alongside would also be a mess. It could be made to work, but there's an awfully big risk involved. The best solution would be for all teams to agree on an amount and give it to the FIA, telling them that they would race under current regulations for that amount.

true, they don't like to pay their competitors, but, this way, FIA can allow a large budget for big teams

not true, if the max budget for big teams is set under today's figure and further reduced in 2011 and 2012

this way, I evaluate that, the global F1 teams' budget, may fall under 1/3rd than now in 2012

well, in my opinion, it will just be like giving money away to someone...and i agree that there are some incentive to reduce spending...
the starting point is correct: where you propose incentives to lower spending.

but on the other hand, if the teams over spend, then they have to incurr "additional" costs, which i bet no body would like.
and incurring more costs goes against the whole cost reduction goal, so it is just going back to where we started.

it doesn't matter how rich you are, giving away money just wouldn't work, its just not rational.

Yeh it does If Ferrari want to spend £250mil they have to give £50mil to smaller teams.

Currently they would just spend the £250mil but under your regs they would have to spend £300mil.


The teams budgets for 08 were:

Toyota: $445.6m -
McLaren: $433.3m - £261m
Ferrari: $414.9m - £207m
Honda: $398.1m
Renault: $393.8m
BMW Sauber: $366.8m
Red Bull Racing: $164.7m
Williams: $160.6m
Toro Rosso: $128.2m
Force India: $121.85m
Super Aguri: $45.6m

I've used 08 exchange rates by the way.

so last year when Mclaren and Ferrari were at each other for the whole season they both would of gone over.

But Ferrari wouldn't of spent 57mil for the sake of getting 7mil. Mclaren might of spent the extra 60mil but i expect they would of just scaled back. I can't see them spening 110mil (half there budget) just go get 60mil worth of upgrades.

Also i imagine that budget includes 09 development so i expect their budgets this year might be around 180mil mark.

Id agree with both Bud and Longbow, why would the bigger teams what to give money to their competition ? Heck I wouldn't want to help my competitors

I did not say they should be "happy" but it's a better alternative than today's two (and both bad) options: run their teams with 1/10th of current budgets (that means transform the F1 in a super-Karts championship) OR disrupt the F1 (as we know it) to start two (smaller and poor) F1 championships (that's the quick way to the F1 death)

adopting my proposal, a big team like Ferrari can be allowed to invest the same 2009's budget (that's around 400 million euro) of which 300 million to its own cars and just 100 million paid/shared to ALL other teams
