I know what caused it, but I don't know why that penalty was selected. Usually, holding up another driver in qualifying simply results in a grid-drop...

It was essentially the FiA rapping them on the knuckles for not having their s*** together enough to control their drivers.

Can we get out of 2007 now?

Its up to the teams how they run their drivers so long as they stay within the rules. they get into s*** its their problem not the FIA's.

I agree, why did the FIA have to do anything in that situation? It was an internal matter for the team to sort out.

The FIA involvement should have stopped at the grid-penalty.

If i remember correctly, Alonso also got a 5 place penalty, right? Absolutely key moment in both '07 championships was that incident, sorta...

Indeed.

I don't even think there should have been a grid penalty. Should have been sorted in-house, all of it

There should have been - it was, under the sporting regulations, a 'blocking' incident. Therefore an official penalty was necessary.

Interestingly, I'm not sure why they lost WCC points for Hungary...

It was another FIA political stunt. McLaren initially appealed, but after the punishment dished out from the spy scandal, cancelled it, for obvious reasons.

Since you all ignored me the first time:

Can we please get off the subject of 2007 now? We've been through it thousands of times, and this thread is about Mercedes Branding in 2009!

True, it was because of the alonso stoping in the pits to block hamilton crap.

One of the highlights of that season in my eyes. Alonso got screwed by his team mate ignoring team orders (after Alonso followed team orders the race before and let Hammy be first out)...so Alonso thumbed his nose at him. I thought it was a beauty of a way to tell Hamilton that he either played fair or would receive what he gave.

To be honest with you all. F1 is not history, it is all business. It's all based on money, when McLaren win? Vodafone win. F1 is based on millions of millions of millions of dollars. Drivers or teams can't get anywhere in the racing world without funding or sponsorship. Fact. This is a business matter for Mercedes were if they see brawn outpacing McLaren they will want to put more money into them, put the badge on so that the F1 fans knows it Mercedes car? It won't make a difference but it's money to them in the end. In the end we all Mercedes will put their star on both the teams car? Then McLaren next season will most probably out pace them and Mercedes will feel like twats. With Ferrari out the way? Hamilton will be the Next Graham Hill.

Wy would they feel like Twats? It's not like putting the Mercedes badge on the Brawn takes it off the McLaren
