Renault are the latest high-profile team threatening to quit Formula 1 unless proposals to adopt a £40m budget cap in 2010 are shelved.

Ferrari joined Toyota and Red Bull in declaring their intention to pull out of F1 because of the plans on Tuesday.

And Renault boss Flavio Briatore has adopted a similar stance.

"If the decisions announced by the FIA are not revised, we have no choice but to withdraw from the world Championship at the end of 2009," he said.

The FIA, the sport's governing body, want an optional £40m budget cap in order to encourage new teams to enter.

The plan would allow capped teams to operate with far greater technical freedom than those continuing with unlimited budgets

However, big teams fear the rules will effectively split F1 into two tiers, those that can live with the cap and enjoy the technical advantages and those that can't.

"Renault has always considered Formula One as the pinnacle of motor sport and the perfect stage to demonstrate technical excellence,2 Renault F1 team president Bernard Rey said in a statement. "We remain committed to the sport.

"However, we cannot be involved in a championship operating with different sets of rules and, if such rules are put into effect, we will be forced to pull out at the end of this season.

Cool, Can't see Mclaren staying now but i understand why they havn't said anything with the liegate stuff.

i think the FIA are gonna back peddle on this one.

fia are going to have to do something now with Renault, Ferrari, Red Bull and Toyota jumping on the band wagon :D:wavey: 40 million budget cap :P

I thought it was raised to $50M but either way it is still way to little. Hell even Elton John stated his umpalumpa and food fetish lifestyle cost him about $1M a month. So cut that budget in half and we might see his Rolls parked under an overpass and him begging for donations!

I'm not stating anything new here so I apologize, but now is the time to seize the moment and have all the teams depart. In the end the problem has always been Bernie's greed and Max's...well, stupidity I guess. Take them out of the equation, distribute funds equitably (and more of them) put in a 120 million dollar budget, decreasing by 10 million per year for four years, and viola(sic)!

If all teams leave the continuity of the REAL formula 1 stays in tact. In revolution timing is everything, and now seems to be the time. This could be a bloodless coup. The new teams might have to delay their entrance by a year or two, but I don't see the problem.

The party's over, Quit-Threat Supporters:

It is time the teams let FOTA do its job. They have moved to aggression too quickly, weakening their position massively.

This is the biggest mistake Ferrari, Toyota, Red Bull and Renault could have made. Only Mercedes seems to have any common sense.

I find it amazing really that so many F1 fans are cheering the manufacturers on in their efforts to rip the sport apart. Absolutely incredible. They haven't even given FOTA a season, or even tried to depose Mosley in the election, and already they're declaring all out war? And there are people saying "Good work, keep it up?"!?

This is insane.

F1 is going down the pan if Ferrari leave.
F1 cannot be without Ferrari.

Ummm Its Mosley who is ripping the sport apart not the teams!

Just because Brawn is the new FIA pet doesnt mean you have to agree with them!

Ummmmm no it's the manufacturers (With the exception of those with wisdom - by which I mean Mercedes) and Max Mosley.

Just because Ron Dennis is a childish grouch with a historical hatred of Max Mosley doesn't mean you have to disagree with everything the FiA does.

See how that works? See how I can question your motives too? And I bet you're going to come back with your usual high and mighty bull about how that has nothing to do with it. Well lemme ask you this: why is it that your motives are always unrelated to your fandom, but mine automatically have to be because of the team I support? This has nothing to do with team loyalty and everything to do with the good of the sport.

You're even blatantly mis-representing my position in order to make your childish assaults on my integrity seem more relevant. I have stated time and again that I do not support the Two-Tier system. I have stated time and again that Mosley is a problem (A power-mad half-wit in fact) and the FiA needs change. What I am saying is quit threats and breakaway series are bad ideas and do not and will not solve the problem.

If you insist bud on so aggressively disagreeing with my views, at least make sure you're actually reading them.

The teams are threatening the FIA with the only weapon they really have. I'm glad to finally see some F1 teams grow a pair. I'm amazed at Toyota!!! I didn't think they had any spine whatsoever so kudos to them. Revolt and civil unrest is healthy for democracy as it prevents a monopoly from settling in. As far as I can see, it could go either way, could be progress in F1 or could be a disaster. I'm just glad to see that the teams aren't willing to just bend over and take it.
