From F1 Live:

Renault is not yet joining the threats of a 2010 entry boycott, but team boss Flavio Briatore has made clear his opposition to a £40m budget cap.

It is expected that when the May 29th deadline for 2010 team entries closes, only Williams, Brawn and Force India will have submitted paperwork.

It is believed that all the other teams, to meet for another round of FOTA talks as soon as this week, will shortly clarify that they are not willing to accept Max Mosley's regulations as they stand.

Briatore, although a staunch supporter of radical cost-cutting in Formula One, told Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper that his objection is to the opening of the door to cut-price outfits.

"Whoever has 20 or 25 million Euros should not be able to operate a Formula One team," said the Italian. "If we make that possible, the brand will be worth nothing.

"It would be like seeing discount stores suddenly established on an exclusive shopping street," said Briatore, the owner of high-end clubs and fashion stores named Billionaire.

He said the situation is serious, because big names including Toyota, BMW and Red Bull have already threatened to quit over the situation.

"Without big, important names - and Ferrari is one of them - Formula One is worth much less," the 59-year-old insisted.

But he suggested that he is not completely opposed to the idea of budget capping.

"I could imagine that FOTA - not in 2010, but starting from 2011 - agrees with the FIA on a minimum sum per year, that is obligatory for all the teams," said Briatore.

"A brutal solution, that is before us at the moment, doesn't have a chance," he insisted.

I can't see Mercedes supplying motors for Brawn and Force India in 2010 if they comply with May 29 deadline. The same for Williams running Toyota motors. :whip:

Cosworth...

Cosworth...could, but not standing with the team manufactures of F1 would be akin to crossing a picket line.

At the same time Williams, Brawn and Force India (as the articles have repeatably stressed) do not have any other businesses outside the world of Formula One Racing.
They aren't car manufacturers etc etc, they have to remain in the sport at all cost. With Cosworth waiting in the wings, im sure that they would be happy to take it on board.

Im surprised at Red Bull - I realise they've always wanted to be part of Manufacturer Gang, but they could so easily run the Cosworth too if need be. Renault remaining silent... does that mean they could leave altogether?

Yes I know he's FOM, but he'll be somewhere involved in all this with Max

doubt it, he don't like the idea of FOTA but for diffrent reasons.

It is a worry alright, or maybe they are unsure which way to go on the issue. Briatore did state at the beginning of the year that Renault will stay in F1 if the costs can be reduced by a satisfactory amount but this might be too satisfactory the 40 mil cap.

Either way im worried till I hear something official from them.

Renault havent exactly remained silent if you take what Briatore has said as a representation of the team!

It was his opinion though rather than an official statement of where Renault stand on the budget cap.

Let them try. They won't all go through with it. And if they did they'd be sorry.

I mean, look. For all people may go on about how F1 needs Ferrari...Ferrari needs F1 just as much. It's what Ferrari does, they race Grand Prix cars. F1 is what makes them such a massive brand. Sure, they'd still have a presence without F1, but it would be diminished. No other motorsport has the reach of Formula 1, nor the heritage and prestige.

Ferrari will not quit Formula One. Toyota probably won't either. Renault might, but that's been on the cards for a while.

It's not like we'll be short on teams. By my count, half a dozen teams are looking into joining next year. If they all get the papers in - as well as Brawn, Williams, Force India and McLaren all of whom will stay no matter what - the grid is still full. Add Ferrari who can huff and puff all they like, but won't leave, and the grid is still bigger next year than this.

I think all the teams have a problem with the 2 tier system Red Bull, Toyota, Ferrari, BMW and maybe some others could leave at the end of the year if the 2 tier system doesn't disappear the whole reason the 2 tier system is in there is because the FIA can't change the rules without the consent of Ferrari. So the only way this is going to be solved is if the FIA make proposals that will satisfy Ferrari such as getting rid of the 2 tier system and having a much larger budget cap. Hopefully FOTA will unite with Ferrari agreeing to a higher budget cap with no 2 tier system.

I am very surprised by Red Bull's threat to pull out of F1, they don't exactly have the biggest budget in F1 despite all the money coming in from their drink sales, you'd think 2010 would be the year to capitalise.

They are not threatening to pull out over the budget caps most of the teams are reasonably okay with it. It's the two tier system that is causing the problems.

And I think these teams who don't want to sign up with the FIA by the deadline are still trying to keep their options open, speak breakaway series. If for whatever reason Ferrari decides to pull out and start their own open-wheel championship while MM/BE's F1 continues to tick off most teams with moronic rule changes and regulations, then you can bet your sweet little bum that others would rather follow Ferrari and organize themselves as the managers of a new series with a higher degree of democracy among them. Ferrari is a big draw commercially for ANY racing series they choose to participate in, and that commercial clout attracts other teams as well - see Briatore's recent comments about the value of F1...

I agree.

I reckon Luca is going to organise the teams via FOTA and get this mess sorted out. At the moment it looks like 7 teams are in a position to threaten to pull out Mainly Ferrari, Toyota, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Renault, BMW and even McLaren. With the backing of the teams Luca use FOTA to say either you change the rules to how we like them or we will take FOTA and setup are own championship.

Hope you're right!! I really hope they can dump the FIA. Mark Hughes thinks they've left it too late. Should have done it before the credit crunch. Not a good time to set up a rival series with all the expense involved. He also says Ferrari is the new McLaren (since the FIA's neutering of McLaren). And already the powers that be are saying they can do without ferrari.I admire what Luca is doing now and hope he can pull it off. What a shame his team didnt think the same way in 2005 when they accepted an FIA deal till 2012 and broke team unity. Golden opportunity lost!
