"I knew I had been beaten by the best driver in the world." Rene Arnoux.
Hi all,
Have been a longtime F1 fan since the days of Nigel Mansell at Williams in '86. His move to Ferrari in '89 suddenly made me interested in Ferrari. When he left my interest stuck with Ferrari and when I was finding out about their history I heard of a wiry Canadian called Gilles Villeneuve.
Tales of his exploits immediately held my interest and ever since he has been my all time favourite F1 driver. I just wish I had been interested in F1 when he was still racing, alas I was only 2 years old when he started at Ferrari. Anyway, followed Ferrari all through the Alesi/Berger years until a certain German joined at which point I fell out of love with the Italian team.
Fortunately the son of the great Gilles came onto the scene so I followed him right through the highs and lows until he left F1, later than he probably should have. Since then no driver has really held my interest, been through phases of supporting Alonso and Hamilton, whose fight and desire to overtake and win reminded me of Gilles. The recent years of controversy which culminated in Hamilton being stripped of his deserved Spa win last season almost made me forget F1 altogether.
Finally to this year, the new rule changes promised closer racing and have shaken the grid up quite a bit, so so far the season is looking good.
Being an avid F1 fan I have been to a few races, walked a few circuits and visited Canada to pay hommage to Gilles by visiting his home town and the museum there. I have even had a go at motorsport myself, having raced go-karts and a track day in an F1 car.
So there you go, cant believe its taken this long to finally get round to getting on an F1 forum!
