Ok I get my info from Mark Hughes at Autosport but it makes reasonable reading. HE has looked at the reasons why the big established teams have been beaten back by the samaller teams-Red bull and Brawn.He looks at many reaons but the one he settles on as being the most likely to affect this change is the competition between Brawn and Newey. Genius' both he looks at their history over the last decade and a half.
Newey-McLaren v Brawn-Ferrari 98-03
Brawn-Benetton v Newey-Williams (for a couple of years)
Now:-

Newey the best technicaloly but Brawn steeped in engineering and with a broader skills base. Some see Newey as an aerodynamicist, but Hughes sights him as a performance specialist, settling primarily on aerodynamics because that is where the most gains are to be made.
Look at some of his other innovations:-
Energy storage (banned'98 but now back)
Brake steer (banned'98)
Torgue Sensing Diffs (banned 2000)
Who got them all banned? Brawn! Is Newey a little pissed? Yes!
Hughes also suggests that when Brawn was at Ferrari they got better results with the FIA, now he's not there, they don't(I'd argue the latter but the FIA are making anti Ferrari noises at the moment)
And ...who just won a crucial FIA decision???
Brawn has likened F1 to warfare and he wages total battle on all fronts. And he's a very clever man.
Reading what Hughes says I find myself admiring Ross Brawn but not liking him very much and hoping Newey wins this battle.
Interestingly I find myself liking ferrari more since his departure and i put that all down to Todt and Schumacher

I've always admired AND liked Ross Brawn. He's like a universal genius of F1 comparable to Leonardo Da Vinci as opposed to Newey who is more of a specialized genius comparable to Michelangelo. I guess it's a matter of taste, but I rate the scientific depth of Da Vinci higher...

I always think that to work for Brawn would be Harsh but fair, where as Newey I would imagine to be esentric (spl) and difficult. I may be wrong but that is how I imagine them to be.

I guess it does all come down to taste but Newey's talents go further than first meet the eye, all technical though I agree.

For some reason, I've always had a bit more respect for Ross than for Adrien Newey. Maybe it's because I've seen Newey drive...

Seriously though, I've always felt that Newey needs a bit of reining in, he seems to porduce cars that tend to be unreliable and are a nightmare to develop throughout a season. Your could put forward a reasonable argument for him having lost McLaren a title or two as well as winning them some.

they might not be hard to develop. it might be that making them faster is hard (as in they are already that good to start off with) plus 9/10 to make things more robust means they get heavier.

I always admired Brawn's tactical and strategic thinking. The way he and Schumacher worked together during a race was also nothing less than superb.

Yes I can see that. Ive never really felt strong like or dislike of him, more i admired him. And Newey ..ive fluctuated in my opinions of him but cannot get away from his technical brilliance.I dont know why i just now find myself wanting Newey to win this battle, its just come upon me that way.

I think I said this once before. People are saying it's weird seeing a new order in F1, but the order is the same as always, Brawn and Newey at the top.

I've made a few comparisons between Brawn GP and Ferrari in 2004, and just to make another one. I was watching a quali lap from Schuy back in 2004, and commentators where mentioning how the Ferrari wasn't really a qualifying car, but it destroyed during the races. The Brawn this year shows an identical trait you have to say. I think clearly its just the way Ross Brawn works, and clearly it works.

But definitely, I think Newey sounds pretty motivated this year. Doing dohnuts in lawnmower in his backyard after Red Bull's win. He's won races before, but clearly this meant something for him. It'll be one interesting year. Hopefully.

The thing is, Ross is an inspirational leader and a very likable bloke whenever you see him, as well as being a genius both tactically and in terms of engineering management. Newey is one of the smartest men ever to grace Formula One, but he's the more insular style of genius.

For my part, I've always liked Ross. And he's now the owner of my favourite team with my favourite drivers at the wheel. So obviously, i want him to win like a flower wants sunlight. But I have a huge amount of respect for Newey. I think Brawn Vs. Red Bull, Ross Vs. Adrian, Jenson Vs. Sebastian is quite an exciting prospect for this season (And beyond?)
