I was surprised how many people genuinely thought Toyota would win. Their qualifying position was largely down to the fuel factor, Glock is a solid driver but nothing too special, and Trulli is a mobile chicane come race day.

I definitely agree that if McLaren really wanted to go for the title, they could develop the car at a much faster rate than anybody else. Whether McLaren should put too much effort into this season depends on the next couple of Grands Prix for me. If the likes of Toyota and Red Bull starting taking some points of Brawn and one another over the course of the next two or three races, McLaren could be on for the title. If not, I'd say McLaren are too far behind and would be better just trying to keep things semi-respectable this season and make sure they have a good 2010.

I completely agree with you! From a selfish McLaren point of view I was really hoping that Toyota or Red Bull would take some points away from Brawn today.

I think today really, Toyota just got the strategy all wrong. They seemed to think the harder tyres would work better, so they put both Glock and Truili on long middle stints with those tyres, but unfortunately they were wrong. Those medium tyres were too slow and they were on them for too long and ultimately it lost them the race.

Button today drove a brilliant race, and Brawn car or not, he won the race on his own merit. He was able to pass Lewis which was pivotal, and then he was on a better strategy than the 2 on front, which gave him the race win by a very comfortable 7 seconds. On the other hand, what was Rubens doing on a 3 stop  That to me didn't make sense, on a 2 stop he could've caught Lewis.

The best strategy for today was clearly to use the soft tyres, and do a short stint on the hard at the end. Ferrari did that brilliantly today, and it earned Kimi an extra point from Glock  I told you, they got rid of their strategist and now they look less stupid.

Vettel was on the right strategy, but ultimately spent most of the race behind people. His first stint he was behind Lewis and lost time to Button, and then the 2nd stint he was behind Truili who was on the slower tyre, so again he lost time. The only time Vettel had clear air today was at the end, when he was on the slower hard tyre. Really, what lost Vettel the race today was the fact that he couldn't seem to get past anyone

McLaren looked good today. This weekend they were the closest to the top 3. Lewis was able to run very close to Vettel when he was backed up by a slow Truili. Overall he set the 6th fastest time. So clearly they are 4th fastest. But they're only just faster than Ferrari who don't have a new diffuser. So I'd expect them to be run much closer in Spain.

Again it's hard to take much from this weekend. Toyota were the fastest for sure, but it was a mixture of bad strategy and an awesome drive from Button. The performance of the teams seems to vary from circuit to circuit between Red Bull, Toyota and Brawn. But Brawn appear to be more consistent with their speed, and their strategy remains flawless. The championship battle very much looks to be all Buttons. I'd say only Vettel and new diffuser on that Red Bull will be a challenge right now.

Toyota had the pace to win today, they just threw it away with a poor strategy call.

Agreed, to have 1-2 on the grid to end up in that position then serious questions regarding their race strategy need to be asked

I dont think so. Their strategy was poor, but they had poor pace several times during the race. The only reason Trulli got that podium is because Bahrain is almost impossible to pass on........ they still have better pace than the struggling teams, but i thought they were faster than they showed today.

Red Bull is strong. if not for chicane-Trulli and VERY good drive from Button, he (Vettel) would have won. At least Brawn are not unbeatable.

I disagree with you. Their lap times were consistently within the 1:34s until their first pit stops, after which point they were on the wrong tyres and/or in traffic. The only person who could match their pace in the opening stint was Button. So if they had stayed on the super soft tyres in the middle stint (and not pulled Jarno in early) then they probably wouldn't have lost so much time.

Yes it is true, Alonso did faint. Im surprised none of the F1 sites have picked this up.
Alonso’s drinking pump failed during the race, leaving him without water most of the duration. (What a bloody drive then!) He subsequently suffered from dehydration as he got out of the car and fainted. Although I'm glad to say he's fully recovered.

Here's some pictures:

Furthermore, he also had a large burn on his back. Some are speculating it could be the KERS system.
