What is the maximum grid size currently allowed and what is the maximum number of teams allowed? Could we see pre qualifying again?

26. In today's modern world of F1 the FIA will only allow for 3 new teams max. As will Bernie.

I'd love to see the return of over-sized grids and Friday morning pre-qualifying to eliminate the slowest of the slow and send them home early. It would give people turning up on Friday's some early morning excitement.

Shame it won't happen :(

Driver salaries aren't part of the budget cap.

It's still a damn fool idea, especially when the raw forces of capitalism enforce their own budget cap on the teams anyway & frankly, if you have only got 30 million to play with you shouldn't be considering F1 in any case.

The FiA are now planning to exempt Driver salaries from the Cap.

Ah yes.

The FIA has also decided that race and test driver salaries should no longer be included in the budget cap figure, a change from the plan announced last month. Expenditure on marketing, hospitality and motorhomes is also excluded.

Marketing and hospitality too. Shows where the FIA's priorities are.

Yes, I found that rather telling too.

Awesome News
I was really happy to hear this when it came about on http://www.itv.com/f1 I'm not surprised some of the old teams could be making a come-back as this is really financially easier than in previous years which i find to be awesome for future drivers, David Richards for team boss

Budget caps required for a new entry

With Lola and Prodrive eyeing a move into Formula One next year, should the proposed budget caps be agreed, there is now another new name looking to join the grid for the 2010 season.

iSport International, currently racing in the GP2 series, is reportedly bullish on its chances of taking a step up to the pinnacle of motorsport according to Motorsports-Magazine.com.

“I aim to give a few people in F1 a kick up the backside and to show them that they are chucking money out of the window for nothing,” team boss Paul Jackson told the publication.

Any decision to enter Formula One will however depend on the budget restraints being in place for next season with FIA President Max Mosley keen to see spending capped at £30 million a season.

Such a figure would mean massive changes for current ten teams as they that spend many times that level, leading Jackson to conclude that it would be better to start a new team rather than merging with an existing outfit.

“The existing teams aren’t structured to operate within a 30-million budget,” said Jackson. “So it would probably be better to start with a blank sheet. We’re accustomed to doing a great job on limited resources."

Lola has confirmed it will be applying for a place on the 2010 Formula One grid under the FIA's planned budget cap regulations.

The UK car company announced on Friday that it would be submitting an entry for the 2010 world championship after being swayed by the FIA's decision to introduce a budget cap that would allow those adhering to it various technical freedoms.

"The decision by the WMSC to revise the figure to £40 million plus engines, marketing, hospitality and driver fees led to a re-examination of the opportunity by Lola culminating in today's confirmation that it will proceed with its Formula One project," the team said.

"The Lola Group believes that the WMSC decisions relating to cost-capping and the provision of revised technical regulations to facilitate the entry of new teams into Formula One should be embraced.

"It is imperative that performance breaks be afforded to new cost-capped entrants who will have a limited period in which to form teams, design and manufacture their cars.

"With these breaks Lola looks forward to competing with the existing teams who enjoy decades of experience. The question of speed differentials, safety and the spectacle of Formula One must also be considered.

"The Lola Group is forging ahead with its Formula One project with the objective of securing an entry into the 2010 FIA Formula One world championship and in the expectation that the decisions of the WMSC will be respected in full."

Lola's announcement comes just hours before the Formula One Teams Association is set to meet with FIA President Max Mosley to discuss the budget cap.

And with the likes of Ferrari, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull and Toro Rosso threatening to withdraw if the plans are instituted, Mosley now finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place.

Cosworth talking to 8 teams?

the FIA's vision of F1 is for it to become a f***ing spec series!

There would be nothing wrong with eight teams out of thirteen running Cosworth engines.

i don't like customer engines as it is. the races in the 1970s when basically everyone had cosworth DFVs just sounded so uninspiring. In the footage, i'm just waiting for a matra or ferrari to come by and make a proper noise

Wanna know a good anagram of Rosset? As the mechanics who worked for Tyrrell at that time. ;)

What anagram? "Scarier Doctors"?

Edit: Of course, "tosser".
