Briatore: FOTA seeking 2010 KERS ban

By Jonathan Noble and Michele Lostia Saturday, April 25th 2009, 08:50 GMT

The Formula One Teams' Association is looking at banning Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) from next season, according to Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

With the devices having only been adopted by a minority of teams this season, Briatore has revealed that F1's teams are looking at getting rid of the technology totally - despite the FIA's insistence that it is important for the sport's green credentials.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about KERS disappearing from F1 at the end of the season, Briatore said: "Yes: FOTA wants to ban it from 2010.

"We understood immediately that KERS was a money-duckling genius, and the FIA should have taken note of that. It should have been discussed before the start of the season, and the same goes for the diffusers. Having failed to do that has forced on us expenses that are crazy as much as useless."

Briatore remains angry about the development costs his team is facing because of the need to develop a double-decker diffuser.

"The fault is the rules being unclear," he explained. "They must become transparent again. It's either black or white.

"To this day I don't yet understand what the FIA means by hole in the diffuser, so I can imagine the embarrassment for the viewers. And besides that, we must all get back on the same footing: today in F1 there are some racing with KERS and some without, some with the super diffuser and some without. That's not good."

Whoop!!!!

Both FOTA and the FIA are going the wrong way about trying to develop technical regulations, in my view. They should just follow my plan and everything would be better.

Formula One cannot be technically advanced and relevant to road cars if it doesn't want to spend any money. KERS is about the only exciting technical challenge in the sport at the moment. That reason along warrants it staying. Banning KERS now is pointless anyway, as most of the spade work has already been done. Talk about shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Yeh i think hes abit upset because his KERs isn't as good as Say Mclaren's

[EwanM]

No because its a FOTA decision, not Renault solely.

Yeh i agree but hes the one going on about it?

if it was brawn (tech director) i'd say you was 100% correct but you see why i think its Renault being upset.

To be honest I'm not believing much that comes out of Flav's mouth at moment after all the crap he has been spouting.

I would really like to know what type of "Technical Relevance " you think KERS has on a road car ? This technology already is used in road cars "Prius, Insight,Clarity" to name a few Hybrids it's nothing new and you're buying into Bernie E's BS. What on God's green earth is exciting about a Hybrid F1 car? I actually agree with Flav they need to cut there losses and get rid of it. If they want to look green there are much cheaper ways to go about it ....Start running the cars on an alternative fuel that's not Fossil fuel based, run the transport trucks on Biodeisel, but leave Hybrid technology for tree hugging Prius drivers.

I don't really care about it's relevance to road cars but I would say it is very interesting and one of the greatest technical challenges to the teams at the moment.
