Force India to introduce new diffuser
April 19, 2009

Mumbai: With the double-decker diffuser turning out to be the biggest weapon this season, Force India has decided to introduce a modified diffuser for the next weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix. This was revealed by team owner Vijay Mallya in conversation with DNA over the phone.

"The (double-decker) diffuser is providing a huge advantage to the three teams (Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams). We have been developing a diffuser which will be put on the car for the Bahrain GP," Mallya said.

He added that it will be an interim diffuser and that a fully competitive one would be introduced for the Monaco GP. Meanwhile, both Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil expressed their disappointment on finishing at the back in the qualifying session.

Fisichella said that the team has no chance on Sunday whatsoever. "It is possible only if everybody stops," he said.

Speaking about the introduction of new diffuser for the next race, the Italian driver said, "It should be better as we are expecting an improvement by three-tenths of a second per lap."Adrian Sutil said he wasn't happy with the way the qualifying went. "We had no grip. That's why we are at the back. The tyres are difficult to handle and for us with lower downforce cars it is a bigger problem," the German said.

I think this really shows how well the team is advancing to come up with even an interim device so quickly is a lot of effort. Force India have been working very hard on the technical side of things like the deal with McLaren and wind tunnel upgrades I think the results of this are starting show.

Hmm, interesting - by my reckoning they're about 0.5s off the back of the pack, so if this diffuser does actually give 5 tenths like it supposedly does Q1 and Q2 are gonna be more or less a complete lottery!

Impressive I must say. Ferrari don't even an interim diffuser coming up. Whats going on.

Force India are a low budget low workforce team, so that fact that their interim diffuser is coming just a week after McLarens (the team with the largest workforce) All respect to the guys at Force India.

The very least Force India should aim for is relegating Piquet to P20 for the rest of the season.

Would be cool to see a merc 1,2,3,4,5,6

Mclaren being the 5-6 ofc.

:P

Fixed that for you :hehe:

The Force India car has, without a doubt, a lot of speed in it. However the real problem is its lack of downforce, making it slow over a whole lap because the drivers are struggling for grip. The car (particularly in Sutil's hands) is constantly the fastest through speed traps and apex speed traps, so he's doing a good job in that sense. If it was better to drive, with more grip, I reckon they would be in Q2 a fair few times this year. I'd still like to see what Liuzzi could do in one, too.

That being said, the high speed in the speed traps is itself indicative of the lack of downforce.
