I have finally had my upgrade to Vista come through, but I'm in two minds as to whether to install it. Can anyone offer any advice/own experience/etc? I'm currently running XP Home on my laptop.

Ok here is the deal so far, Vista is the same as all new Microsoft Software, it has many many faults. There are perks of course, but some programs wont run on vista, and wont run until Microsoft release the updates. So personally I'm gonna wait till 2008 before I make the switch

I wouldn't advise it, plenty of people on F1 modding forums saying that mods for F1 Challenge and Rfactor will crash on Vista.

My mother in law got a new "Vista Ready" machine a few months ago. It has XP Home, but is somehow "Vista Ready". The guy at the computer store said if you try to put Vista on one that is not "Vista Ready" you will get problems. I have no idea if that is a sales lie, but I would never bother changing my OS. I think it's just inviting problems. I simply get a new machine that has the new OS. I'd be needing a new machine every 3 or 4 years anyway.

but heres a tip, place the Vista CD in ya drive, look @ the files, via explorer.exe then choose which files ya want, like .exe files, this might be a easy way to get the GFX files, while using XP!

I am running Vista Business and I LOVE IT !

Of course on a gaming machine stay with XP - Vista SP1 is appearently due very soon, maybe that changes something. I can run most games, but NFS Carbon is crashing. NFS Most Wanted is much better anyway and that runs without any problems.

All developer tools that I use are running without any problems on Vista

No, the truth is that Linux is better than everything else :D

More seriously, if you have enough memory (at least 1 GB), you can install Vista. Of course there are some compatibilty issues, but I used to use it during 6 months, and everything work fine for a Microsoft software. I had no problem with games, including rFactor and Live For Speed S2. Vista is not a revolution - basically, it's Windows XP+security improvements+3D effects as [F1 is Bohemian Rhapsody] - it's a good evolution. And it's a bit exagerated to say that a lot of games or programs won't work under Vista.

darskroker - Is it really that much better? I thought they took the *really* cool stuff out of it? (like WinFS....). I'm not upgrading quite yet because I don't want to give up so much space on my hard drive ;)

No it is not really much better, but it is not as bad as some says. If you want really want to have great changes, you can wait. New features, such as DirectX 10 or WinFS (which will probably be inplemented in Windows Vista SP1), will really be used in 2008 imho.
