Really? He was pretty impressive and certainly caught peoples' eyes. He was on for a strong finish in his first race before his engine gave up on him and he should have been the winner in Brazil. He had character and aggression, it was only in later years that he really trailed off.
I guess, though, to the keen eye Montoya was overshadowed by Raikkonen that year. Having only completed twenty three races in his entire career before entering Formula One, he was doing well to be so fast.
I always had my doubts with Montoya. Seeing his championship winning year in Cart (although he was quite impressive) he didn't have anywhere near the dominance of say Bourdais. Then again, Bourdais hasn't blown anyone away yet.
Even back in his F3000 days Montoya was too hot headed. It was always going to hold him back.
To be fair to Montoya, his competition was a little stronger than Bourdais' in the later years.
Yes that is true. However I still didn't see him as standout when he entered F1. That was just my personal opinion.
