The only dumb question is the one that is NOT asked!

I disagree. Here is why:

"When will people realise that Nelson Piquet Jr. is the best Formula One driver ever?"

Let me guess, his father asked that question. :hehe:

I've never looked at the situation from the viewpoint that Whitmarsh didn't know what was said in the 1st FIA meeting.I would think there would have been some sort of debriefing.

That's what I would have expected as well. Whitmarsh claimed he was busy packing up after the race, but I find that tough to believe. The conversation would only have taken a few moments. And even if he was too busy, there is no reason why he couldn't have phoned him later that evening or the following day.

I would think Whitmarsh would have been a little more curios to know what they said after the first meeting, especially after finding out how severe Trulli's penalty was. Whitmarsh must have known that FIA came up with some new evidence if they were called in for a second meeting.

It seems to be the case that Whitmarsh honestly didn't know that Ryan and Hamilton had lied. The official McLaren and Mercedes press releases both said that Hamilton was asked to let Trulli through. I'm assuming Whitmarsh (and Haug) assumed the FIA listened to the radio transmissions and had just been harsh on Trulli (which is not really unbelievable, given the FIA's form).

It still doesn't add up, why would they assume FIA would be so harsh if they heard the radio transmissions to let Trulli through. You would have to assume if you were Haug, Dennis or Whitmarsh that there was something going on and if not it's quite surprising that the senior members of Mclaren didn't give this situation any more thought

Yeah. If Whitmarsh, Haug et al. had anything planned, I don't think the team's official line would have been that Trulli was allowed past by Hamilton at the request of the pitwall. Autosport are taking the credit for being the whistle blowers here, but that's far from the case. Hamilton spoke to a couple of journalists, and you would only need to have listened to Haug or gone on the team's websites to find there was a mismatch between what Ryan and Hamilton said happened and what the team said happened. You really couldn't make this up.

The most shocking thing of it all to me is the driver who tells the press what happened, which he knows they will print...and then lies to the stewards AND thinks he is not going to get caught? Mind boggling.

Your absolutely 100% correct. Think about it, none of us on here are involved in F1 . But even I knew that when Trulli went completely off the track and Lewis went through, it was a 100% lawful pass to make him 3rd and podium. What staggers me is this:- 1) Lewis shouldn't have needed to check with his team that needed clarifying, 2) His bloody team didn't need to check with Charlie, if they were doing their jobs correctly and knew the yellow flag rules (Lewis told them on the radio Trulli went completely off the track). A complete arse of it was made by McLaren and I'm furious. Here's my synopsis..........
Ryan realising he made a tw@t of himself thought he could con the stewards and get back from 4th - 3rd and went into that meeting all guns blazing to disgracefully discredit Trulli. Lewis went along with it, its an absolutely disaster for F1 but even worse McLaren

Check out this weeks autosport, Mark Hughes puts the whole saga down to McLarens' paranoia, paranoia that it be perceived to be doing the right thing. So tied up are they in trying to achieve this, that it impairs their ability to think quickly and concisely. Without this Hamilton wouldn't have had to ask, without this he wouldnt have been told to let trulli through. For this the FIA treatment of McLaren has to take part blame.
