The McLaren team are expected to face disciplinary charges after being found guilty of misleading race stewards following the Australian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton and the team have already been stripped of their points from the race and the Englishman has issued an emotional public apology.

But BBC Sport has learned governing body the FIA is poised to order them to officially account for their actions.

A spokesman said the FIA was awaiting a report from its race observer.

It is understood that is expected imminently, and any further developments should become clear by Wednesday.

It is expected McLaren will be called before a meeting of the FIA World Council - but that this is unlikely to be scheduled before the Bahrain Grand Prix, the fourth race of the season, later this month.

The World Council is the body which disqualified McLaren from the constructors' championship and fined them $100m (£67m) for their role in a spy scandal involving Ferrari in 2007.

There is no limit to the action it could take in this instance if it deemed it serious enough.

Hamilton himself is expected to escape further censure.

Oh no not great for Mclaren :(

I just can't believe a top team like this can repeatedly get itself into the s***s over and over again. Well, I hope whatever they get is a fair punishment that would attempt to restore any damage from their infringement, rather than an outright ban for the season or whatever.

They'll probably just get a fine and reprimand. It would be silly to make it harsher than than. It isn't like that was the first time stewards were lied tom anyway.

I think a fine and reprimand would be fair. But how big would the fine be? I'd guess £10m or so. Giving the team a £25,000 or so fine wouldn't even be noticed by them.

No but McLaren were just the stupid ones to get caught! but i agree i think they will get a monetary fine but surely not massive considering the global financial climate!

OK am new here... 1st post.
I am a macca fan but more-over, a brit fan. So any Brit that comes through I generally tend to want them to do better.
Anyways.... as a macca fan... im totally gutted at how they handled the whole situtaion.
Right from the off when LH said to stay in 3rd... its legal, and they told him to move over for trulli... wrong decision.
Then to get LH to lie (granted LH shouldnt have lied, but there you go)

I think Mclaren deserve a huge penalty and it pains me to say it. Lying direct to teh Stewards is a big no no.

BUT.... if the Stewards wernt lazy in the first place and just listen to the audio, there wouldn't have been a problem.
8-)

How much chatting goes on over the radios during the race though? And are there any other radio comms going on other than between the pit wall and the driver? Is it all in English or are there a range of languages?

I don't know the answers to the questions, however I'm assuming that some of the radio comms will not be in English and there will be a fair amount of radio comms floating around over a race. Therefore is it really practical to have stewards listening in on all radio comms over a race?

A very valid point, but they know what incident they are looking at.. so they know which 2 comms to pinpoint.
They would also know what lap / time to look at too so it wouldnt take too long. And no, not needing stewards to monitor them, just review them when needed.

And they could at least have botherted to answer the direct question put to them from McLaren. "Are we allowed to stay past Trulli?"

yes definately, but also its clear rule so why even bother?
A mess from the start and the only one believing in the rules was Lewis.
