How is it reckless and how is it unprofessional? He's not the boss or the PR manager or in customer service, he's the driver and he can act as casual as he pleases.
The car had a KERS issue that they were working on, and he knew they were running out of 2 hour race limit, and he knew there's a 10 minute warning before a start, He knew the laps would be behind a safety car, he knew there'd be time for only a couple of laps tops in which he cannot pass anyone, not enough for 3/4 distance, and he was outside the points so he would finish outside the points, that's IF they can fix the car, which they could not. He was the only smart driver. And he likes to make visual statements about being cool. Fait accomplis. Why sweat it for nothing right? All those people frittering around like there's gonna be a start, when any applied logic dictated there could never be one, and all for nothing? Why?
The only reason they didn't call it earlier was because they were figuring the state of things at the time the red flag dropped, where everyone was at the end of the previous lap, and some were in the pits so it was confusing calculus, to determine the exact finishing order. Hell they didn't even get it right in time for the podium ceremony.
