McLaren won't appeal Hamilton exclusion

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, April 2nd 2009, 10:48 GMT

McLaren has decided not to appeal Lewis Hamilton's exclusion from the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton was disqualified from the race result on Thursday after the FIA stewards deemed the Briton and his McLaren team had "acted in a manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event by providing evidence deliberately misleading to the Stewards" following the Melbourne race, where Hamilton was elevated to third following a penalty to Toyota's Jarno Trulli.

Following the discovery of new evidence, believed to be radio transmissions, the stewards summoned both Trulli and Hamilton again today and decided to withdrawn the Italian's penalty while throwing the Briton out of the race.

McLaren said in a statement on Thursday that the team thought the FIA had already reviewed the radio transmissions after the race, and did not believe "it was necessary to discuss them with the stewards on that date."

The team said it will not appeal Hamilton's exclusion.

"The FIA Stewards have reviewed their decision of Sunday 29th March 2009, and have excluded Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton from the results of the 2009 Australian Grand Prix," said McLaren in a statement.

"Vodafone McLaren Mercedes understands that the Stewards made their decision on the basis of reviewing radio transmissions between the driver and the Team.

"The Team mistakenly believed that the radio transmissions had been reviewed by the FIA on Sunday 29th March 2009, and consequently did not believe it was necessary to discuss them with the Stewards on that date.

"Nonetheless, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team now regrets that it did not do so, accepts the Stewards' decision and will not appeal."

Well I hear that the FIA will release a transcript of the Full recordings of Mclaren radio, a copy of the interview Hamilton gave after the race.

Until this is released I'm not saying anything.

Whitmarsh - we didn’t lie about Trulli incident
April 2, 2009 by James Allen

New McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has just come out into the Sepang paddock to speak to the media after the news that Lewis Hamilton and the team have been thrown out of the results of the Australian Grand Prix for ‘deliberately misleading’ the stewards over the incident with Jarno Trulli, involving overtaking behind the safety car.

“Lewis was instructed to give the place back to Trulli, “said Whitmarsh. “The team thought, having not seen the incident, that it was the safest thing to do. That instruction was given to Lewis and he didn’t agree. Before that discussion was finished, Trulli had been passed. If we look at the speed traces and compare it to other periods, he didn’t do anything abnormal and it’s quite clear that Lewis shouldn’t have passed him. As soon as that happened we spoke to race control to ask if we could retake the place. race control was busy and couldn’t answer us.”

He added that the team then thought when they met the stewards that they were aware of the radio conversations. This turned out not to be the case.

He went on: “The stewards now believe that we weren’t explicit enough about that radio conversation and thought that was prejudicial to the decision that they reached. We regret that and it was a mistake by the team.

“There is not implication that Lewis lied to the stewards. I don’t know what they meant by (deliberately misleading), you’d have to ask them. They clearly feel that the team didn’t give enough information about the radio conversation.

“They believe that the omission of the information about the radio conversation between the team and Lewis was withheld and that is what they believe was misleading.”

The suggestion being voiced here is that the FIA considers this matter so serously that it is considering taking this matter to the World Motor Sport Council where further sanctions might be applied.

Coming less than two years after McLaren was fined a record $100 million for the Ferrari spying scandal, the team is trying very hard to deflect the impression that it has acted dishonestly again.

Hamilton and McLaren being thrown out for misleading the stewards means that Trulli gets his third place back. Ironically he and his Toyota team had been thrown out of qualifying for having rear wings which were overly flexible and therefore illegal. Which of the two crimes is the worse?

These two incidents certainly make two of the big manufacturer-backed teams in F1, appear less than honest..and this is only the first race of the season.

Scenes from the Sepang paddock
April 2, 2009 by James Allen

There was a lot of energy in the paddock this afternoon as McLaren went into crisis management mode, with head of communications Matt Bishop (ex F1 racing editor) and Steve Cooper (ex F1 racing journo).

Scrums of TV crews and hardened journos waited around outside the teams offices in groups waiting for Hamilton or his boss Martin Whitmarsh to speak. The chat was all about what punishment they would be given. Many questioned how Hamilton could have told reporters straight after he got out of the car that the team had told him to let Trulli past, but then gone in to see the stewards and said the opposite. Apparently the The FIA will publish the radio traffic on the FIA and F1.com websites at around 1-30pm today, the first example of this since the new transparency policy was introduced.

These gaggles of journos, waiting for their prey, are a common feature of F1 life. When I was a put reporter I was in the middle of it all, I had a break when I was a commentator and now I’m a reporter again I’m back in the middle of it.

We have waited hours in the past for Schumacher after some fresh controversy, like Jerez 1997 or Monaco 2006. Hamilton seems to be slipping into Schumacher’s shoes as far as being at the centre of controversy is concerned. What was it Ron Dennis said in 2007? “Competitive animals know no limits.” He was speaking about Alonso but Hamilton is revealing himself to be every bit as ruthless a competitor.

Whitmarsh came out at around 5pm, standing in the doorway at the back of the McLaren garage where the press had moved to. The TV crews waited 20 metres away. A daunting sight and proof of the gigantic interest in the story. Before you ask, the woman in the black outfit works for Spanish TV…

Hamilton had seemed really down at heel in the FIA press conference at 3pm. He refused to speak about the matter under discussion, because it was still being considered at that time, but his body language spoke volumes; he knew he was going to get pasted.

He stared distractedly out of the window as huge flashes of lightening and peals of thunder dominated the sky. Rain like that on Sunday would stop the race, hell you could think about building another Ark..

The only smile he managed was when Jenson Button was asked what it was like having the best car and he said “It feels good.” Lewis was sitting behind him and smiled what looked like a smile of being genuinely pleased for the guy, but it could equally have been a rueful smile. His car is a long way from being the best. Button listed the cars he feels are now, or might become, his closest challengers; Red Bull, Ferrari and BMW. He did not mention McLaren.

So about 30-40 mins (UK time) until the FIA release these documents. This is crazy! Is it legit, or is this just another attempt by the FIA to spank MClaren

Could people stop the fighting? On the rare occasions I create a thread, I do it for discussion, not for people to throw insults at each other. It's frustrating.

[racechick]

i think some people inthis thread have been disgraceful, there is no need for personal insults.

Agreed. Stay on topic and discuss the facts. there is no need to get personal.

[EwanM]

This is a serious issue for the sport and will always be a talking point. However we're talking about Formula One - in today's case Hamilton, Toyota, Mclaren and the FIA.

There is nothing there to suggest that users should berate each other. In saying that users should not purposely bring anything outside of F1 into the conversation!

Anymore of this and i'll lock this and spoil everyone's fun.

The Spygate case has closed, although it is part of the long running dispute between the Governing Body and Mclaren, we don't need to bring that back up, especially if it resorts back to finger pointing.

The FIA are a Joke. This does not happen in any other racing series. NASCAR has their s*** together. No one ever leaves the speedway without knowing where they stand after the race.

There is no point in watching races if the cars just get adjusted a week after. I can't see how this event ramped up to this outcome

However, I will be watching FIA 1 this weekend to see the track action, who has the better car, whose a good driver, but the outcome doesn't matter anymore.. Its a f***ing joke.

[AKR]

yadda yadda yadda AKR talk. i like how you always have to bring nationality into s*** to justify the world in your mind "Trulli the Italian" given his third place back. Fact is he lost "his" third place when he went off track. But again the way you carry on just represents your mindset and knowledge of F1. Youre just a tribal fan youre not an F1 fan! go watch your football if you want to get tribal you nutter!!

At least I have a cultural identity. Yes I am Italian and I have a rich cultural Identity. What do you have, VBs and fish and chips?

And yes I am not a fan, I am a TIFOSA. Difference is that I go hardcore for my team and I support them like I do in football.

Oh you want to have a go at culture now huh! good work woggy well how about this

Youre a f***ing Slav youre not even Italian you have no identity youre lost in this world claiming to be something youre not!

Ok why do i get the feeling this is getting beyond personal ??.... I mean I always get the blame.... AKR .. I know you a much better person than this. let him go play in the field with the lambs. he needs to cool down... maybe a dip in the pigs trough will help ???

I anticipated that bud would call me a f***ing Slav or something along those lines and although his comments were harsh and typical of his character, I am not overally offended. Only because I was ready for it. Generally those comments do piss me off however.

[AKR]

i just read this on anohter forum

i atcually heard that the FIA find this matter so serious they may consider taking this to the World Motor Sport Council where further sanctions might be applied!!....

EXCELLENT.

Racism. How surprising.

Exactly what I was thinking. Bud doesn't understand the concept of multicultuism. He hates the concept In Australia so wouldn't have a clue that it also exists in Europe.
