Kimi Raikkonen has suggested that the lack of form showed by both himself and Fernando Alonso in comparison to their team-mates is down to tyre troubles. Much was expected from Raikkonen and Alonso, and so far, they have both failed to deliver, outshone by their team-mates.
Raikkonen has explained that the switch to the Bridgestone tyre this year has been difficult, particulary for the drivers who have a naturally more aggressive style of driving. His point makes some sense – both Alonso and Raikkonen raced on Michelin tyres last year, whereas team-mates Massa and Hamilton both raced on Bridgestones.
“These tyres are very different to what I was used to,” Raikkonen explained. “And from what I heard and read, Alonso’s comments have basically been the same as mine.”
Other drivers are also confirming the change has been hard. Heikki Kovalainen has been quoted as saying, “I used to drive the Renault in the same way as Alonso did. But I have had to change back and as a result, I have got closed to the way Giancarlo drives.”
Albers has said that he feels the tyres has flattered the rookie drivers – like his team-mate Adrian Sutil. “He didn’t have to adapt,” Albers explained. “I think it’s been the same for Lewis.”
