Montezemolo hits out at points system

Luca di Montezemolo, president of Ferrari, has hit out at the current Formula 1 points system, arguing that his driver Felipe Massa should really be leading the championship. “In a serious championship which properly rewards winning, we would be ahead,” he explained.

The current championship leader is Lewis Hamilton who has managed a podium on all four races so far this season, but hasn’t managed a win. Massa has won in both Bahrain and Spain.

The F1 points system was changed at the end of 2002 to allow a smaller advantage to the race winner – previously, second place would take 6 points instead of 8 points. If the former points system was applied to race results this season, Massa would be leading the championship by a single point instead of sitting in third place.

Massa referred to the situation as ‘unusual’ in his online blog. “After three poles and two wins in a row, I am still only third in the championship.”
