There is controversy surrounding the Australian Grand Prix. The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) are planning to lower the depth of the Albert Park lake in Melbourne by about 1.5 cm. However Australia are currently suffering from one of the worst droughts in over 100 years and locals are complaining that the lake is already too empty.
AGPC executive Tim Bamford has said that the sotrm-water in Albert Park needs to be used to help reduce the amount of drinking water needed at the track. It also needs the lake water to soften the grass around the race track ahead of the Formula 1 race. Soft grass is essential for a safe race – it not only minimises the dust and debris on the track itself, but also provides a safe, smooth run-off area should the cars find themselves off-track.
