Wurz – it was a lucky escape for F1

Sebastien Vettel has stated that he believes that the shunt between Coulthard and Wurz could have easily been F1’s worst moment since 1994’s Imola weekend.

David Couthard followed Wurz into a corner too quickly; Coulthard hit Wurz’s Williams’ and then was catapaulted over the front of the Williams, missing Wurz’s face by an estimated 15cm.

Talking of the incident, Vettel said, “If the car had hit Alex’s head, he wouldn’t have had a hope. It was incredibly dangerous.”

Norbert Haug, Mercedes’ competition director, praised Wurz for his lighting fast reactions. Wurz sensed Coulthard’s car and pulled his hands away from the steering wheel as the Red Bull flew in front of him. “If he would not have done that, Alex would have some seriously damaged hands,” explained Haug.
